What Kickstarter campaign have you backed?

I figured since we're all interested in Game Design, we could maybe SHARE the Kickstarter campaign we chose to support.

This will also allow us, as a community, to become more knowledgeable in the various TableTop Games that are interest to each and every one of us.

For example, I missed the EPIC KS:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1172937197/epic-card-game/description

It's not always easy to know all of the KS TableTop Game campaigns that are going on ... and we all have diversified interests in gaming. It would be cool to give a nod to the games we feel have struck a chord of interest...

So let me start!

Loot Quest!: I backed this because it was a fellow BGDF designer and I really thought his monster illustrations to be fun and quirky.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1181684328/loot-quest

TAU CETI: I really liked the modular nature of this TableTop Game. The tiles and the various dark matter tiles seemed very original.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/outerlimitgames/tau-ceti-planetary-...

Radho Runs Through: I wanted to have a better look at Richard Ham's review process... At many times, when I voted I would get the second or third choice of games (in terms of popularity). It seemed rather frustrating that usually my #1 choice did not match.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1855928930/rahdo-runs-through-year-...

Halfsie Dice: I really like polyhedral dice. Had to pick up one of these nice dice sets (I chose "The Heir" - blue/grey). They are really nice dice!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnwrot/halfsies-dice/description

I've contributed on other campaigns - but in other categories not applicable to TableTop Games. Figured I'd start by SHARING my picks - and YOU can do the same to help make us all (as designers) aware of the amazing KS campaigns that we chose to back.

Cheers!

I have only backed one

I have only backed one game:

Codex – Sirlin Games

http://sirlingames.com/codex

The game arrived recently and it's absolutely amazing. If you like MtG style card games, this might be the best version of it. It's not innovative mechanically, but it combines so many different mechanics together to create a rich, deep game with many options, each with their interesting pros and cons. I always walk away stunned and enamored by its complexity.

Sorry, I'm gushing here, but it's a serious achievement of a game.

Hmmmm

Lets see...

-Xenoshyft: Dreadmire (card game)
-The Cloud Dungeon (RPG game)
-Avignon: Clash of Popes (2 player micro game)
-Spaceteam (party game)
-...and then we held hands (2 player game)
-Battlechasers: Nightwar (video game)
-Less - Like Chess, but Less! (2 player micro game)
-Mint Tin Mini Apocalypse (micro game)
-ALEX Bottle (fancy water bottle)
-2 Rooms and a Boom (party game)
-Pillars of Eternity: Lords of the Eastern Reach (card game)
-Werewolf (party game)

And I totally would have backed more if I had more disposable income :)

I'm actually...

I'm actually bummed I missed CODEX. I had the opportunity to get in on the KS, but I decided not to. From what I've herd it's an amazing game. Now I have to wait a bit to get it through their website without all the cool stuff. lol

A huge variety, really.

Game of Energy (Support pledge)
Dwarves in Trouble (Earlybird, base game)
Barnyard Roundup (support pledge)
Massive Darkness (minis board game)
Mothership (support pledge, print n' play)
Dark Souls (minis board game)
Great Scott! The Game of Mad Invention (support pledge)
Scythe (Recieved - LOVE it!)
GemPacked Cards (Recieved - Quick family fav)
Coup Reformation (Recieved)
Gone Viking (Recieved - have yet to actually get to the table)
Robotech RPG Tactics (Recieved partially - waiting on "wave 2" for 3 years now)
PWNS: A Game of Strategic Mayhem (currently live)
Stay out of my Dungeon (currently live)
Legend of Vyas, Might and Fury (support pledge - unsuccessful)
Apocalytropolis (support pledge - unsuccessful)
Ready Check (full pledge - unsuccessful)
Creature College (support pledge)

And that's not all; that's just what has been backed with the I Will Never Grow Up Games account.

There are a lot of pledges I've made as a support pledge ($1 or $2) simply because I liked the look of the project and I like the way the creator does it, but I had no funds (or in some cases interest in having the game) at the time.

There are of course many, many others I missed out on that I wished I had gotten behind as well.

Another game on KS I thought was COOL was...

Scribe's Arena: The game is based on Hangman (at its core)... But introduces a bunch of Fantasy to the game with all kinds of cards and such. Really wish I would have backed this KS when I knew about it!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/230992694/scribes-arena-a-fantasy-t...

If you just want to have a look at the FANTASTIC "artwork" done by the artists on this project check out this BGG link to the PNP version of the game!

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/94654/print-and-play

And the rulebook is also available for download at this link:

That's all for now!

Why couldn't they be like HALF the price???

Love the design of these Polyhedral dice... Plus they are made of Aluminum.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1429341405/ako-poly-dice

But the price is all wrong: $69 for 7 dice... That's almost $10.00 per dice.

I like SHINY dice but at $10.00 per dice ... that's just too expensive. Would love to get me a set of those PURPLE dice.

Aww man... I do like POLY dice! Would be an awesome set! Man they are so cool I would want to buy a set of each one!!!

(Please tell me that I'm nuts to pay $69.00 for 7 dice!) LOL :P

Update: Decided to buy 2d6 and will pay only $22.00 (including shipping). Another KS that I have backed (the second one concerning dice...!)

Since they're 3x funded, I would have to say the price is right. Or people are just insane. It could easily go both ways.

Hahaha! In all seriousness, people can clearly do whatever they want with their money...but $10/die...Wow!

Actually it's more...

When you add $6.00 of shipping it's almost $11.00 per die.

So I bought 2d6s. I want to know what ALUMINUM dice feel! Are they lighter or heavier than plastic? I like POLY dice - but $69.00 + $6.00 = $75.00 USD. So it's closer to $100 CAD. Too expensive for me.

I love buying NEW dice and I am especially fond of POLYs. But I can't justify spending so much for a set.

A couple aluminum d6s will have to do. Maybe I can get one RED and one BLUE. For my personal 2 Player Game Set of "Tradewars - Homeworld". :D

Anyways I'll let you know how cool those dice feel, once I get them!

Update: Personally I think they made a mistake charging so HIGH. Had they priced the dice around $50.00, they would have gotten even more backers. Probably over $100k. But at $75.00... I choose to back - cheap - only because I'm curious about the feel of the dice: weight, temperature, texture, etc...

If they had price at $50 then maybe they would have had more pledges but then gone bankrupt trying to fulfil. There are a lot of factors to take into account and we can't see all of them, and it's not always good to massively overfund. It looks like they are doing just fine so far with the decisions (and price points) they have made.

If you look at their other campaigns...

They were selling custom d6s for $15.00 and got over 6,000 backers with about $165k...

"Not always good to massively overfund"? That's what ALL KS people hope for. Did you take a look at their Stretch Goals?? They have goals up to $100k.

Are you telling me they don't want to reach their Stretch goal of $100k???

I think, personally, they over-estimated how much they can charge for 7 dice. But we'll see how the remainder of the campaign goes (will they or will they not reach their $100k goal?!)

questccg wrote:

It really isn't.

I have heard several experienced KSers (sorry, I can't provide citations, so this is just anecdata) talking about problems with overfunding. One publisher in particular, LudiCreations, has on several of their KS projects deliberately limited themselves so they don't go too far beyond their target. The idea is that they know they can produce on time and with the required quality if they are between certain bounds, so they try to avoid going outside those bounds.

:) You've got me there, I didn't read through to the stretch goals. I assume in that case that they were hoping to exceed $100k. Hopefully they even have plans in place!

To me...

Personally it's not so much the $10.00 per dice that limits me. As I said I backed the project for a total of $22.00 ($16 + $6 shipping). So I am paying $11 for two (2) d6s.

But the price tag of $75.00 USD converted to CAD is OVER $100.00.

That's where I can't justify spending over $100.00 CAD for 7 Polyhedral dice. So it's the total amount not the per unit cost which dissuades me from buying a complete set.

And their discount for multiple sets is el-cheapo: you save like $1.00 per each additional set. Come on, $1.00??? If it was like $25.00 for 5 sets - that would make sense. But only $5.00 ... too expensive for my blood.

But I get where you're coming from: limiting production. It seems like the goal is always to reach your highest Stretch Goal but you'll settle for less so that the campaign is successful if you don't get the projections you had hoped for (eg. $100k in support from backers).

WOW

@Jon: That's quite the list!!! Did you actually buy "copies" for most of these games - or are you just a support backer (monetary reward only)?

I ask because backing each one of these games - is rather costly! Especially when games are on the average between $40-$50 each.

Anyways kudos for adding to the KS list... I'll be checking out more of these sometime soon...

Cheers!

@QuestCCG

90% are the actual product/game/support

6%-7% is support (I.e. $1 - $5 to show support)

3%-4% never funded :(

I know how much LOL I have a library of about 170 games it's small I know but honestly $40-$50 (some were much more based on level i.e. Shadow) a few times a quarter is not that bad.

:) If you're ever in central NJ and want to try out some games let me know. I can't get the regular game group to play them all and I refuse to trade/sell them as I backed them for a reason. :)

Yes for TAU CETI Funding

Jon,

So, the behind-the-scenes on TAU CETI...the first campaign, which I Backed didn't succeed. However, it was during that campaign that I struck up a dialogue with Mike and Stan Strickland and within three months of reviewing the rules they invited me to join the team as Lead Developer. Over the next eight months we play-tested it well over 100 times and refined the rules (with help from the BGG community!) and launched the new campaign, which did wildly succeeded!

Cheers,
Joe

No worries...

@Jon: Don't worry about "hijacking" the thread. Rich Durham, one of the Admins, has graciously added this thread to the "Welcome" List of Threads to read for newbies to BGDF.

So whatever dialog it creates, newbies will be put in touch with what's going on, here on the BGDF forum (and in this thread).

Cheers.

I'm going to take this

I'm going to take this slightly further and in a one liner add WHY I've backed these games.

As a budding designer, who is very interested in keeping control of the design/look/feel of the game Kickstarter is an obvious route to accomplish this - but what makes a successful campaign:

Oligarchy: A Dsytopian Card Game - I played this at the UKGE and loved it, having had a good chat with the designer too who shared some of his game designing experiences. The artwork for this is also brillaint.

Statecraft: Another one I saw at the UKGE - didn't play this but it looked ace - I've been following the team on both Kickstarter and Facebook since and I would strongly recommend checking out the designers blog/diary on their website.

Mistborn: House War - this is a tie-in to the hugely successful Brandon Sanderson's series: Mistborn, of which I am a fan.

Overseers: This i picked all down on the artwork, it looked just stunning, and was very reasonably priced.

Beneath Nexus: An Asymmetrical Dungeon Crawling Card Game - Again, i quite like dthe artwork and I really liked the idea of a dungeon crawler.

Endanger Orphans of Condyle Cove: This campaign was brilliant, the artwork is amazing, the tutorial video was spot on, and even the way tha campaign blurb was written was interesting and funny. The stretch goals were great. This game was very successful and I think a big part of that was the amount of interaction with the funders from the team.

Steal This Game - well, why wouldn't you support this game after what happened at Essen, and for such a small amount.

Knights of Camelot - CURRENT - Part of the reason I'm backing this is the price £10, and delivery for Christmas, even better. A fun little bluffing game that I can have for very little money and in a few weeks. It has a very homemade feel, which makes it very endearing, and the team being fellow country men, it was a no brainer.

Go Eco: The Card Game - This game is hands-down the best looking game I've found on Kickstarter, the video for it was equally brilliant and all put together so well. I was genuinely gutted when this failed.

I'd be very interested into the whys form those of you have backed so many games

Anyone with NEWER KS campaigns

Looked over the TableTop Games on KS and I admit I wasn't very impressed. Maybe I missed something?! Anyone have any recent or on-going KS backing to share???

I'd like to see what people think looks like a good game to back.

Personally I mostly pledge a $20.00 backer level which is usually the $1.00 pledge + some extra cash. But sometimes that translates into a nice set of custom dice (like with Tau Ceti!)

Anyways would like designer feedback on recent KS people are backing!

Cheers.
