Hello everyone,
I'm a graphic designer with 15+ years award-winning experience who is currently working freelance for others as a creative director for my own one person company. Day to day I'm working on annual reports, signage, identities, brochures, postcards, icons, logos, etc. But every moment of my free time is pretty much consumed with board games of all types. In fact, I just got done playing Dune: The Dice Game with my girlfriend (not ideal as a 2 player, but it's a lazy Sunday).
Through my enthusiasm of board games, a friend and I have been kicking around some ideas for games ourselves. It started when I one day thought "Hey I'm a print graphic designer, I should look into doing graphic design for board games!" and my friend saying "Hey I have an idea for a game but need a graphic designer!" One thing lead to another and we are currently chatting about 3 different ideas, which I'm sure I'll be posting about here soon enough.
Beyond that, I would love to talk to anyone here about any graphic design needs they might have. I have zero experience in the board game industry at this point, but I think a look through my portfolio will demonstrate an experienced eye for typography, layout, iconography, etc. Rates are reasonable and/or negotiable. It's become a dream of mine to somehow meld my professional life with my game life.
Will be talking to many of you soon, I hope!
Thank you everyone for welcoming me to the forum and your really nice comments on my portfolio. I'm really hoping to translate some of the more formal design experience I have into well communicated game designs. I think a lot of graphic designers for board game companies likely start out as illustrators because board games generally need so much illustration already. However, I feel like the formal design can have a big impact on how well a game communicates hierarchy of information, game flow, and general rules. Really looking forward to becoming more a part of the community. I need to dive into the forums and see how everyone presents their ideas. I have a little micro game on my desk right now that I brainstormed a week ago but have not done any math on at all. That's going to be my first research project: game math!
