Hey, I'm new here (obviously). My current project isn't actually designing a game myself, but I hope it will be useful to some of you who are designing games.
I am working on software for my website which would allow a user to input the dimensions of all the components of a game and from that information and other options the user can select the software will generate the files needed to laser cut the pieces of an easy to assemble wood box with inserts and dividers.
My initial idea was to design boxes myself (and I'll still be doing that some), but I realized with the software it opens up options for games I don't own and even for games that haven't even been published yet as long as the user knows the components of the game.
I'm hoping this will be useful for users on here in that it will give you the ability to design custom boxes/inserts for your game which could be offered with pre-orders, Kickstarter rewards, or just a premium version of the game.
Anyway, the development of that idea is how I ended up here. I'm hoping you guys can give me some input on the usefulness of this idea as I go down this road and also hope that I can contribute my input on some of your projects. I look forward to learning from you guys and hopefully working with you too once my project gets off the ground.
Thanks! Currently, I would have to take it to a shop to cut out the pieces. But I am hoping to do a kickstarter project to cover the cost of purchasing a laser cutter for my own shop. I should be able to keep prices lower if I can do it in house (though it's a significant upfront investment for the laser cutter and other equipment).
Having the equipment in house will also make it easier to do more thorough testing on my software and allow me to offer other services like cutting/engraving custom bits and pieces out of wood, acrylic, etc.
