Hello to everyone here on BGDF,

My name is Luke and I go by Machius online. i’m a long time player of board/card games and while I have always enjoyed brainstorming game ideas in my spare time i’ve only recently become more interested in going beyond that stage and trying to design (and hopefully produce/get published) a completed game myself.

My gaming likes are somewhat eclectic beyond usually having a sci-fi or fantasy theme and includes games like Magic: the Gathering, Munchkin, Arkham Horror, Lords of Waterdeep, the Resistance and many others.

I am currently working on a fairly light card and dice game (unsure if it'll use a board or not yet) with a fantasy clan theme that I hope to be able to share later when it's a bit more fleshed out.

welcome

You've come to a good, supportive community of game designers. Word of advice for when you look for feedback on your game: Try to ask specific questions instead of linking to your game rules and saying "what do you think???"

It will help focus readers so they don't feel they need to spend a lot of time figuring out all the details of the rules.

Cheers!

Game board alternatives

One thing you should consider if designing a board game vs. a card game is the COST of producing an *actual* board. Adding a board to a game is an expensive proposition.

Cheaper and more flexible alternatives are hex or square tiles. this would be something similar to "Settlers of Catan". That can allow you to create a dynamic board surface and it comes with the benefit that games are different (as opposed to a traditional board).

There is also the possibility of using several *game mats* in the case of games which want flexibility but not require a complete one-by-one dynamic surface. It's sort of a hybrid solution between tiles and a board.

The other option is making a *analogue* game. This is in the spirit of something like "Warhammer 40k" where the table surface is the actual playing surface and you can use either a ruler or a card to measure distances for movement and ranged attacks. This works well something akin to miniatures or a dual type of game.

Any how just throwing out some ideas - I don't know what kind of game you are planning on designing! :)
