Hi, my name is Kurt,

I am a fledgling designer and looking to ‘dip my toes’ into publishing. I have one game that I have been developing for several years as a hobby, along with 7 other concepts within the past few months. During the past few months time I realized I significantly under appreciated the value of the online community and think it’s time to get serious about designing and join it.

I heard mention of this forum from Gabe on an episode of Design Board Game Labs podcast, and had to check it out.

I am quite interested in identifying market feasibility of game concepts, tips for play testing groups, and asking for help with game mechanics to simplify gameplay without losing strategy or theme.

My professional work is in technical design delivery, but not board games. I play regularly in two game groups of hobbyist and casual game weight and am looking forward to interacting with this group.

Thanks bgdf members.

This is a small community ... but still

We've probably only got about a dozen or so REGULARS on the forums. Others are "temporal", need help with a game or Kickstarting a game and then disappear thereafter. But our members are very KEEN when it comes to Game Design... And even though we only have a limited amount of regulars, they do span different genres from wargames to RPGs (X3M, lewpuls, Jay103, let-off studios, Mosker, Fri, FrankM, IWNGUG, larienna, ElKobold, evansmind244, Stormyknight1976) to admins (richdurham, questccg, Mindspike). There are some new arrivals too (ananda, cleps82 amd Kamil A).

Feel free to share you thoughts on the open threads, start a blog discussing a game of your own or even ask question by opening your own thread with a topic near and dear to you.

Welcome to BGDF...!

Also, someone called "The Game Crafter" keeps posting pictures of bits of wood. It's weird.

Indeed this is TRUE partially...

There are more contributors ... This is TRUE ... But as far as the REGULARS are concerned... My list is pretty representative of the people who actively are involved with the community (for the most part). I'm not saying that they are the ONLY ones, I'm just saying those members probably contribute the most to the threads and conversation on these Forums.

Of course there are others who have been active in the past... But it seems like most members are "temporal". What I mean is that they are actively involved in the BGDF Community working on Design A or Design B and then after those projects come to fruition... We don't hear much from them anymore. Whether this is because they have other interests or obligations, or realize that designing games is much more than just the "designing-part". You need to find people to back your game, build your fan-base and grow with several titles to your own credit.

It's really not 1-Hit Wonders that succeed. Take Jamey Stegmaier: he's produced like a HALF-DOZEN games. All different themes and mechanics and now he accepts designs from other people too. This business is about longevity much like Reiner Knizia can attest to.

So for some it's a FAD (or a passing interest) and for others, they are interested in exploring more of the landscape offered by gaming (somewhat of a hobby that they enjoy).

The bottom lines is we WELCOME you whether you are "temporal" or want to stick around for the good stuff!

As one of the Administrators of this forum (and your daily moderator), I welcome you. Cheers!

The Game Crafter is relevant to our discussions

I think the reason that "The Game Crafter" (Tavis) post pictures of parts and new items ... is to help spawn "more creativity". To inspire us with all the unique pieces and parts available to the designers to use in whatever creations they would like to design.

So I don't think it's WEIRD... It's TGC saying: "Hey folks, look at what we have for you! Think of all the games you may want to design using this brand new item/part!"

And I think it's in a way COOL... I mean TGC doesn't have to post their new parts or accessories. They could stick to their own News/Blog. But they go the "extra" distance to share it with BGDF.

Tavis is also available should you have a TGC question or help direct you to the right person. It's nice to know that aside from TGC Support (which is awesome BTW ... big Thanks to Alisha and Cecilia for helping me out!), Tavis may be able to help you out. Nice to be able to know there is a face to "The Game Crafter" brand/service...

Welcome

I'm a infrequent visitor who's been trying to get my games in a place for further play testing. With a four and two year old at home, it's been hard to put in the time needed for proper testing and tweaking. But welcome Kurt. And best of luck in your game publishing endeavors. There are a lot of great resources and people on here.
