Hey guys,

My name is Meghan and I am designing a party/card game. I just finished version 2 of the boxed version and created a website for the game (www.disturbingpeace.com). Check it out. Any feedback you could give on the website, game play, instructions, etc, would be very helpful.

The game is pretty simple - read an adult focused statement card out loud, read a letter out loud, and have people go around the room answering the statement card with a word of phrase that starts with the letter that was chosen. If a player can't come up with a unique answer, they can get "shamed". The website explains it in more details.

I joined this website to help me solidify some of my game details and get feedback from other game designers.

At this point, I have lots of things that I need to firm up.
1. The name of the game. I liked Disturbing Peace because it implies rowdiness and immaturity, which is the intent of the game. Others I have talked to don't like it so much.
2. The box design, which I am not able to show you...yet. Version 2 should arrive in the mail at the end of this week and I plan to take pictures of it and post it to the website.
3. Shaming. I personally find it to be a fun twist on a basic card game but would love to hear what others have to say.
4. Alphabet dice versus cards. I originally wanted to use a 30 sided alphabet di to generate the letter for each round. Since The Game Crafter didn't sell them, I made small cards instead. Now I am re-considering the dice option (since people have told me to). The only problem is 1) I would have to buy the dice myself and add it to the game before I sell it and 2) since the di is so large, it requires a larger box that looks a bit ridiculous with only 120 cards (the box would normally fit 276 without dice).
5. The concept of a wild letter. I have not incorporated this into the website version, but I want to. Although I am not sure the best approach on how to do this. If a wild letter is picked, should the host get to pick which letter they want to use that round? Or should it mean that players aren't restricted by a letter that round? Or should the host role twice and provide players with 2 letters that round?

If you have time and are interested, feel free to take a look at the site. I would appreciate any feedback you have to give. If anything, it could provide you with a fun game night w/your friends.

Thanks!

Meghan

There isn't really any

There isn't really any content on the site to comment on. Format-wise, it looks like something a teenager would use for posting selfies and deep thoughts. It needs a lot of work.

I'm not the ideal candidate for answering your questions, as I profoundly hate this sort of game, but . . .

1. People will inevitably read the title as "Disturbing the Peace," which does imply rowdiness and immaturity but in a criminal sense. I associate the term more with my white trash neighbors shouting at each other outside, drivers pumping their bass, and guys getting into fistfights outside of a bar.
3. Do you remember how much fun you had playing Truth or Dare as a kid? I don't. Those games always ended up as exercises in sadism. Hopefully, you are reining it in with cards restricting players to certain options. Why would anyone want to play a game that involves them being publicly shamed? The terminology there, at the very least, seems contrary to having a fun time at a party.
4. You don't want a 30-sided die. Order one, and take a look at how small the numbers are. Try rolling it, and you'll get a feel for why this sort of die is more of a novelty item.
5. A wild letter makes no sense for this game. You could have one that requires players to answer with a statement that does not begin with a letter. This could be interpreted as a number, sound effect, etc.

Thanks. I appreciate your feedback. Your take on the dice and wild letter are different than what I was expecting, but good for me to hear.

6x d6s!

Why not just use custom six (6) d6s:

  • So there are 36 possible faces. 26 + extras for vowels.
  • Like 3 "e", 2 "a", 2 "i", 1 "o", 1 "u" and 1 "y".
  • That's 26 letters + doubles (10) = 36 faces.

This makes it more like a Yahtzee type of game - but people love rolling dice... Six (6) dice is the maximum you can roll in one hand... And you could need to use those letters to earn points. The more letters you use, the more points you earn.

Just an idea... Since you mentioned thinking about using dice.

Some people love rolling dice. As a wargamer, I love rolling a handful of forty dice. I'm not sure party game people do. Yahtzee is an exception, because it is a dice analog to poker, but the vast majority of family/party games involve no more than one die with mechanics that can be understood by small children/dumb adults/and drunk people. Naughty party games trend more toward the drunks. Rolling six dice to determine a letter is far more complicated than drawing a card with a whimsical illustration of a letter, like:

It helps maintain a game aesthetic if there is no board.

Roles & Characters

Yeah I agree for a PARTY game, having ONE (1) card is probably better than having to roll six (6) dice. Having the dice would work for a 4 person type of game - not a PARTY game which could have upwards of 10+ players...

Something akin to Mafia or Werewolf... Maybe Megsta12 should consider ROLES for her game. Like the words you choose must relate to your character you are supposed to assume.

Like for example: Gangsta Rapper. You need to use "gangsta" words that would match the character you are supposed to be. I had suggested this to another designer when he had a submission to one of the design contest with one (1) component. His take was "Sell me this pen." And I said it would be cool to have characters you try to mimic when trying to sell the pen: door-to-door salesman, beauty saleswoman, etc.

@Megsta12: Maybe you should add CHARACTERS/ROLES to your PARTY game. It would make it harder to choose words that match the personality you have drawn...

Again just some ideas. PARTY games with crowds of 10+ people need things like ROLES to keep the game FRESH!

Just my 2 cents!

Update: I also don't like the name "Disturbing Peace". It doesn't, in my mind, fit the nature of the game.

BTW if you ADD ROLES, a name that I like is:

"Word Up"

(like the Urban Dictionary defines it as: "I comprehend what you are saying and verify that your statement is true, my good brother.")

Sounds very TRENDY... And could garner a whole other audience to your game... Just with a NAME like that! And it's like "Your Turn, you're Up". Anyways I like this name a lot. Trendy, crowd pleaser, play on words, etc.

Update 2: You could also have a moderator for example for Weddings... An announcer that calls out the letter "A" and the person that has the "A" stands up and says his role and states the Word he has designed... And then the moderator can say: "Word Up my brother!" Hahaha... So much fun.

You can do a GROUP "Word Up" or "Shame" (I like the "shame" idea...) People cast their vote by saying "Word Up" vs. "Shame" which ever is the loudest determines if the player continues on to the NEXT round in which players get eliminated...

And you can use this Little Mix SONG on your Kickstarter:

Little Mix: Word Up!

Cameo's Original version: Word Up!

Mouhahaha! Just some more ideas...!

I can tell you from experience that this gets racist super fast, even if some of your best friends are black. Caucasians tend to enunciate rap lyrics.

That is a hilarious definition, like something you'd hear in a John Landis movie right before Big Jim Slade busts through the wall. Not sure anyone should name their game after a Cameo song though, which I guess would be trendy for the audience who still breakdance fight and yearn for New Coke.

Remember what I said earlier about caucasians . . .

It's supposed to be a light-hearted PARTY game! I'm not talking about black & white references, there should be like a bunch of role cards: like Male Gynecologist. IDK think up interesting roles and the words they may want to use...

The Gansta Rapper was just a reference 8 Miles Eminem - Figured it could be like Word Battles - much like Rap Battles...

Anyhow I see this as being a FUN Wedding Contest: the winner could win a prize!

Note: The BGG game list doesn't have any game called "Word Up". And I think Cameo's SONG has REAL SOUL and is totally awesome... You can maybe just get a musical version only - if you can't get the actual song for your Kickstarter... But if it's a REVIVAL via the game... Could be cool.

Well I think so...!

Update: It's a 1986 song (which is awesome) and it features Levar Burton! Even better! Hahaha

Update 2: DJs can PLAY Cameo's "Word Up!" to signal the beginning of the game at a Wedding! I can totally picture a HOT/TRENDY party game to be played at weddings...

Again just ideas...!

Hah! questccg, you sound like

Hah! questccg, you sound like a funny guy/gal! I really like the name Word Up. I think it's a funny play on words (which implies a fun game), and the game is all about picking the best word or phrase (so it fits). I am going to toss that idea around to see what others think of it.

The role idea sounds hilarious. I could just picture getting the male gynecologist role and focusing every answer on sex and vaginas. Although I think it would be hard to play that way. I was already thinking it would be difficult to come up with good responses when drinking, let alone good responses based on your role, when drinking. But you're right - it would keep the game fresh and exciting. Any other ideas on how to incorporate roles into the game without having to focus all of your answers on your role?

So apparently there is a game

So apparently there is a game called Word Up already - http://www.teflgames.com/ - it just isn't on the BGG list. Does that matter? I am not sure what the rules are around game names.

Wow...

Good you looked. That does suck... I searched BGG and found nothing...

My suggestion is to make the name "longer". Like if you search the US Trademark database you find "Word Up Kids". You can't use that because it is already *trademarked*.

But I would NOT abandon "Word Up ..." Looking in the US Trademark database, I did NOT find "Word Up" for a PARTY Game.

So maybe you could use "Word Up: The PARTY Game". This is just an example.

Maybe you can think up something else which might be more appropriate...

Update: Ask Soulfinger how to file a trademark for the game. Like I said he can claim to have a Trademark - but that doesn't mean people cannot use their own names (as I have showed you).

Update 2: Here is the link to the searchable database. I checked there are 250+ items but none for just "Word Up".

Maybe...

"Word Up Peeps"

I'm sure if you start another thread saying you are looking for alternative names to "Word Up ", the designer may come up with even better suggestions...

So my advice is: Start a new thread saying you like "Word Up" but need to add something to the name because there is already a game called "Word Up".

Update: About the Cameo video, you need to watch from 0:35 - 0:45. Here is the link again:

Just those 10 seconds are so hilarious! LOL Break out the Funky Dance moves! "Bust a move..." ROFL

What do you think about the name Blunt Expressions? That was the original name before I changed it to Disturbing Peace. Everyone I talk to seems to like the first name.
