Hey everyone, Guido here from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I´m 32 and been interested in game design for over a decade now. Been mostly delving into RPGs and miniature games, with quite a few games, mods and hacks on my belt. Mostly things made for contests, challenges, and house rules that turned into full game hacks.
I ran Salgan al Sol for almost a decade, a very big and influential spanish language RPG design community and have played miniature games since I can remember. I´m also a graphic designer by trade.
I´ve been getting into boardgames slowly these past few years and even though most european and american games are extremely hard to come by where I live, I´ve managed to explore quite a bit. Vassal, android versions, p&p, all that helped.
To be short and concise about it, I´ll just name a few favorite games to draw a fast picture of what I enjoy: Memoir 44, Summoner Wars, Small World, Ogre, Commands & Colors: Ancients. That should give a quick profile.
Anyway, been lurking this community for quite a bit before finally deciding to join and I can tell it will be very interesting to share my extremely limited experience with anyone needing feedback, and of course to present a project or two to the able minds around this place.
Cheers,
When I play a game it´s usually with my girlfriend who does not speak or read complex English. This leads me to two paths. Either I find something that´s not too text dependent. Or I evaluate the work needed to translate it. That, however, is relative, since I have done full game translations for a long time (Donjon, Shadow of Yesterday, never published Trollbabe).
So, believe it or not, I have translated every Memoir 44 card for example, and most of the Summoner Wars cards. The latter can actually be found in BGG as I upload the pdfs with the text for anyone interested.
I´m not sure about the market for import games, specifically in my country. The main reason is our economy is going to hell right now and the "import" part is out of anyone´s mind. God knows my local gaming store (where we play miniature and board games) is sweating bleach these few weeks.
The other reason is cultural. We don´t have the cultural inclination for gaming that the US and most of Europe do. Gaming in general in niche, and then the sub-hobbies (eurogames, miniature wargames, roleplaying games) are even tinier niches mostly saved for very few people in a few big cities. This is something I´ve been "studying" (if you will) for a few years now, whenever my mind flies into trying to create an imprint to publish games in Spanish.
However, I´m always offering the translation of small to medium games, specially ones available free online. Most big publishers don´t really have an interest, and if they do, they already have a translation for the Spaniard market of very few, select games. Ironically, most nobody takes the offer (and I don´t ask for money for free games).
Hope that paints the picture.
