Hello everyone!

I'm a new member to this forum. I started designing games in my childhood. I grew up with no brothers or sisters, so whenever I got a board game as a gift I used to play it by myself since I had no one to play with. I would set up the game and explore each position. With time I started creating my own games by tweaking other people's games in the beginning and later designing new games from scratch.

I used to enjoy games like Monopoly and Risk and Imperio Cobra (it was a roll and move adventure game) when I was 8 or 10.

Then I grew up, I went to university and after that I got a job. I did not play during all those years. It was not until ten years ago, when I met some people that were really into games, that I got back into playing. I started playing games with them and as I should have expected my mind started thinking of new ideas and variations on how to play the games we were playing differently. I loved the simple game Zombies out of which I made many variations.

I haven't played that many games like probably most people who have not stopped played games since childhood, but I did try quite a few games since the year 2006.

For the last two years I have been working on a game by taking the things that I liked in other games I played. So, this is a semi-cooperative game with a traitor (like Battlestar Galactica or the Resistance) with area control (like Risk or any game like it) and mixed up with the classic prisoner’s dilemma. I'm a psychologist so I wanted to create a game where people had to face dilemmas and be in need to cooperate to survive but at the same time having to pursue their own goals.

I made a prototype to play with my friends by taking pieces from many other games. After playtesting with friends I took the game to gaming gatherings to present it to people who didn't know me and get feedback. So far, so good.

But now I'm at this stage when I would like to go a step farther and partner up with an artist or other designers and try to bring this baby to live!

I have never published a game before. I heard of thegamecrafter.com where you can build a good looking prototype, but I'm a bit stuck at this stage.

Is there anyone who has already published a game or two and successfully went through this moment of insecurity, uncertainty and the feeling of being lost while thinking "what do I do know?". How did you make it happen? What's your story? Are there other people in my situation as well?

I just got here, so I haven't had much time yet to look over and browse all the different tabs. I'm looking forward to read more about you.

If you have read so far, thank you for taking the time. Drop me a line if you feel like it.

Sabazius.

Sounds interesting

The game sounds like it might be my sort of thing. Let us know more details when you get a chance.

How much playtesting have you managed to do so far?

Hello Sabazius. I do not have answers to your questions, and for this I apologize. I just wanted to welcome you to the site and say that I share some of the experiences that you mentioned -- growing up an only child and altering games to suit your purposes or make them better. This is still one of my favorite activities. I think many of us were doing this before we even knew that "board game design" was a thing; I have no doubt that many would cite this as the beginning of their journey.

I'm of the opinion that being an only child has given me a tremendous amount of focus and imagination. I'm not suggesting that this is the only way to develop such qualities, but it is the road by which I've come, and perhaps you as well.

Nothing is more satisfying to me than intense, uninterrupted interest in a creative project. I could literally spend an entire day in an empty room with no windows, just plumbing the depths of inspiration. I do need a pad and pencil, and preferably some room to pace around, though. hahaha

I just wanted to meet with you on this ground, since you saw fit to draw attention to your history and so I presume you deem it an important factor in your development as a designer, as do I.

Unfortunately, I still have that strong tendency to enjoy solitude, so I cannot advise you much about traitor mechanics, etc. -- I play almost exclusively solo, and design from that perspective (mostly co-ops, or games with very little competitive psychology). But I wish you the best, and I think that if you engage this community, you will find yourself better for the experience.

Ciao!
