BGDF member Xaqery wins Hippodice 2009!

Long time BGDF member Dwight Sullivan (Xaqery) has just won the 1st prize at Hippodice 2009 with his game Noblemen.

If you think that's not enough, second place went to Jeff Allers (jeffinberlin), another BGDF member and regular poster on the site, for Wampum. Even more, he placed a second game in the top six, Artifact.

Congratullations to both on this great achievement!

You can see the official results (in German) here.

Congratulations!

It's always great to see a BGDF member succeed!

Update on Noblemen?

Has Noblemen found a publisher? (if so, you can keep the publisher's name secret, of course, since they usually like to be the ones to make the announcements).

Has Noblemen found a publisher?

I don't know what the status of Noblemen is, but if it hasn't been picked up by a publisher, I know a certain company that would be interested in it...

Congrats!

So cool! Congrats!

i first heard of Xaqery after

Congratulations, Dwight and Jeff

Everyone here is such an inspiration!
Keep on truckin'!

Cheers,

P.S. Heh, spam has some uses, pushing old news to the fore ;)

That's fantastic Xaqery

How has it affected interest in the game? Do you have a publisher? When do we get to buy a copy?

Awesome!

I've not been on here a lot in the last few years, but it's very awesome to see those from this community win the big game design prize. Just shows how much this place has grown.

Jeff, Congrats on 2 entries in the top 6! :)

Where can we read about Wampum and Artifact?

Thanks. I won't be posting much on the games until I have a publisher(s), now that there is added interest in them. I will say this exclusively to ya'll, since you are also game designers:

Wampum was the only game in the final round that played 30-45 minutes--most of the other ones were "meatier", including Artifact.

Wampum is a hand management/trading game, but you trade with cards on the table, not each other (although the cards traded from one player will probably be picked up by another player later). The interesting design note is that it started as a gift for a friend. She had noticed I used CCG sleeve holders for some of my prototypes, and she gave me some left over from her sons. I told her I would design a game for her, and asked her to give me a topic. She said, "George Clooney." Oooookay...so the original game was collecting and trading George Clooney memorabilia, and watching lots of his movies. I liked the mechanism so much, I changed the theme and modified the mechanics.

Artifact has been in the making about 6 years, 4 of which included co-designer Bernd Eisenstein (who was left off of my entry since he already had two games in the competition. It's a set collection money-management semi-engine building game about archeology, if that makes any sense.

Both games were turned down by mulitple publishers over the past couple of years, on both sides of the ocean. I still liked them, though, so I thought I'd try Hippodice (even though half of the Jury knew the games by now!). Glad I did--now several publishers I would not have guessed are interested.

So again--I encourage everyone never to give up and try Hippodice as a great alternative to getting all the German publishers to play your game--all at once!

Wow, Thanks everyone. I am

Wow, Thanks everyone. I am pretty overwhelmed.

I want to share this with many other people. During Noblemen's on-again off-again 3 years of development I received advice, play testing, art assistance, and design help from lots of people. Some of are BGDF members. Here I particularly want to thank two of them; Seth (Sedjtroll) and Scott (doho123).

Seth stepped up in the 11th hour and play tested my game and then was amazing at brainstorming ideas with me to help push the game over the top.

Scott is a long time friend and was the person that suggested I check out BGDF in the beginning. Then he helped me in many ways including designing the art for my land tiles.

Thanks guys.

Congrats to you Jeff! It seems that it was a very tight competition and your game looks pretty great. Well done.

I do encourage every BGDFer to enter contest with their designs. One reason I did it was give myself a deadline; that made me focus and helped add closure to the project.

The prize for Hippodice is only that if you make it to the final round a handful of industry peoples play your game. Which is pretty excellent.

Today Hippodice...

...tomorrow the world!

Congrats, gentlemen! BGDF does it again!

Congartulation !

Great news! Congratulations to both of you!

Way to go Messrs. Sullivan

Way to go Messrs. Sullivan and Allers!!
And congrats to the whole of BDGF as well!

Congratulations, Dwight and Jeff!

Nice prototype

Congratulations, Dwight!

That is one sweet-looking prototype, dude! Thorsten Gimmler was at our gaming group last night and assured us the mechanics were just as nice as the presentation.

I think you would probably join me in encouraging everyone here to enter Hippodice, if you have a "Euro"-type game idea you'd like to see published. It's not at all expensive (only costs 5 Euro per game, I think, and only if it is accepted for the second round when you actually send in your prototype). There's no big prize money, but it's a great way to get the game noticed by publishers, who make up the Jury that decides the winner.

Bravo and well done!

Bravo and well done!

Sweet!

I liked Noblemen when I played it - I'm psyched to see it win the contest! :) Congrats Xaq!

Grats

So... What is the prize?

The prize is having your game

The prize is having your game played by the leading lights of the German game publishing industry, the developers and publishers from Abacusspiele, Phalanx Games, Pegasus Spiele, Hans im Glück, Alea, Schmidt Spiele, Amigo, Zoch, and a Spiel des Jahres jury member.

No small number of Hippodice finalists and winners have gone on to be published as a result.

And, of course, bragging rights!

For those interested, I am proud to announce that Noblemen - 2009 Hippodice winner by BGDF member Xaqery (Dwight Sullivan) is indeed being published. Pegasus Spiel in Germany has picked p the game and is releasing it for Essen next month, and TMG is partnering for the English Language version!

So congrats Xaq, it took a few years, but it looks like your prize for winning Hippodice is publication after all! :)

Nice work, gentlemen

Congrats on the placings ... well done.
