My supposition was that they were floating man-made island/fortresses....

PS - I agree with nearly everyone here and I vote for Steel, however, the bottom half does need to have some "weight" added to it. Rivets or some line detail should do the trick, as has also been suggested.
On the map, certain small islands (notably Ireland and Japan) do not look like the colour they are supposed to be. I imagine that you have used an "inside glow" effect on all landmasses and fiddled with the options to create the shadow edge effect you've got, which works quite nicely on the larger areas. However, in the smaller islands the "shadow" overwhelms the base colour. I would highlight those individual areas and adjust the effect settings for them specifically so that the proper base colour shows clearly.

Yes the structures up there are man made, they are spaceships.
That's interesting, don't know we'll get to that, but it will be explored, ;)
For all other comments, we will try your suggestions, we will use the steel version and "enhance" it.
For those of you who have seen the previous Red-Black-White designs, which one do you prefer? The new or the old one?
