Open Slots in the GDW

Hi folks,

Though it took longer than I expected, we have run out of games for the GDW. That means that the late spring and early summer are wide open for those of you who would like to put up a game in the GDW! Next week, we'll leave "open", and we'll start fresh in May with DarkDream. While I do feel that the one-a-week pace has outstripped many of our abilities to keep up (including mine!), I think that people are still getting useful feedback, so I think we should keep up with this pace, at least for now. I'm also willing to slightly relax the guidelines about needing to put up feedback on a couple of times prior to being granted a slot. BUT, please keep in mind the spirit of this forum -- it's a "club", not a "service". Putting up your game means that you also want to give feedback on other users' games.

Thanks, and PM me if you want a slot! This is a great time to dust off that project you've been working on for a while but just can't make the breakthrough you need, or to get early feedback on that great idea you've just come up with!

I for one wouldn't mind seeing games that have already been run through the GDW and then gone some substantial changes... I'm not saying we should put the same game up again, and to an extent at the end of the session we have seen some of the changes to be tried or implimented.

What I mean is maybe a follow up if you keep working on your game. I'd like to see which changes were tried, which worked out, which were abandoned, and which spurred other changes.

So as long as we've got this lag week, if you have had a game in the GDW and have kept working on it afterwords, take this opportunity to post a little follow up.

Clarification on Posting a Follow Up

Sedjtroll,

I think it is a great idea for the creators in the GDW to go ahead and post up follow ups.

I presume the title of the new post would be something like, "Game #29 Chariots of War -- Follow Up."

I imagine you would like to have a brief posting, as there could be potentially 30 long posts that would swamp everyone.

As such, is it fair to include the new rules in the post (including maybe other new documents if available on the new cards and so on)? Or should we describe in the post with sufficient detail the essential idea behind the changes made. Maybe something like I did when I posted a testing session report:

http://www.bgdf.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1032

I just want a little clarification for everyone so a fair treatment of an evolving game can be made for all who contributed in the GDW.

Thanks,

--DarkDream

I think it's prudent to include whatever you like... an up-to-date ruleset wouldn't hurt (especially if it's just a link). A summary of the changes in the post is probably fine. Any new pieces that have been produced (or links thereto) would be fine.

Remember, if someone's not interested, they don't need to read it, and if they're only a little interested they can read your summary and be done.

In fact, that's what I'd probably assume if I were to write one... that most people will read the summary and only the very interested parties will follow the link to the rules and think about it any further than that.

Remember, this time we're not asking for anyone to do anything with our game, just posting a follow up so we can see what the feedback led to.

I will post another game. The only problem for me is that my games will normally go from concept to play tested rules in about an afternoon. But I’m sure I will get stuck on another game soon. So put my name on the list in the most convent place for you

I think Seth's idea is great. I for one am interested in seeing what's happened to some previous games, especially before I joined the board in February. Reading the archives has made me wonder how things worked out. I know my game will be going through serious revisions once my slot is up.

Well.. I've got 2 games I'd love for everyone to try out...
however I don't feel I really qualify, even thou I've gotten a few games from the GDW and read them/tried them I've not had anything 'new' to add for input, everytime I have something, I see someone else has allready said it... I'm trying (and getting my group to playtest a game I've printed it tough... ) but haven't been able to provide any decent feedback... But, if the GDW is getting low, and no other 'regulars' have anything to put up I'd be thrilled to toss a couple of my games up on here and see what you all think...

Just a clarification, the GDW isn't intended to be a playtesting workshop; we don't expect each other to playtest games, just to read the rulebook and provide feedback. You'd be surprised how many comments and suggestions can arise just from reading the rules! That said, if you have playtested one of the games, this is something that I'm sure the designer would be extremely interested in hearing about, so be sure to let them know!

Also, don't feel that your remarks have to be "innovative". If five people tell me the same thing about my game, I'm going to take that much more seriously than if just one did, so don't worry about echoing the remarks of others. In fact, don't feel that you necessarily have to keep up to date on the status of the discussion of a game just to contribute feedback; that's certainly not expected.

I'd be more than happy to put you into the schedule for early June. The important point, which I'll just make again for everyone's benefit, is that the workshop is really a "club" rather than a "service", so we ask that people who sign up for slots use them (very important!!!!) and that people provide feedback to others' games as well as receiving feedback on their own. People who put up games for review but don't ever provide feedback on the other games will find future requests met with a certain lack of urgency, which I think is fair...

Looking forward to checking out your game!

Dang...somewhere in my mind I had registered that.. (reading/providing feedback.. ).. But I've actually done what I do with all my games once I've gotten them and that's take them home and play them by myself.. then I got my group to play two of them... hmmm... let me mull over what we found the qeustions I had and then I'll get back on and give a little more input about them...
Oh.. and cool... I'm looking forward to putting up my game info.. (the rules are the least tested part of the game... )

Not sure if there are still slots open for games, but I would be interested in submitting rules for one of my more games. I will PM to see if there is a slot available.

Yes, indeed, there are lots of slots open. (You already know this thanks to my PM response, but for everyone else's benefit). We're good for July now thanks to two new additions (SiskNY and GeminiWeb), but have August and everything after (ugh! lame Counting Crows ref!) wide open, so drop me a PM if you'd like to put your game in the rotation.

I am willing to relax our customary "feedback" requirement, with the common-sense proviso/plea -- please, if you use the GDW, provide feedback on others' games as well. Almost everyone has been very good about this. Thanks so much for your input!
