Hey everyone,

I am currently looking to design a game along the lines of Pirates of the Spanish Main and I was trying to find information on designing constructible cardboard punchouts that could be popped out and assembled to create little vesicles. I was wondering if anyone knew of any resources to help me design the cutout or if anyone had any experience building something similar.

Thanks for your help!

Go to The Game Crafter

TGC has custom punch-outs. My recommendation is to go to:

https://www.thegamecrafter.com

And join the CHAT window on the Bottom Right corner of the page. You can create CUSTOM Punch-out (Small, Medium or Large) using SVG files. You can also use Component Studio (as per what I have heard) to "optimize" the path of the laser cut (to effectively lower the cost of production).

Both are offered by TGC (Custom Punch-out and Component Studio).

My recommendation is to JOIN the chat (not sure if it available to anonymous users)... You may need to create an ACCOUNT. Not sure. But you basically put in your e-mail, choose an account name and voila I believe they e-mail you a validation link. What I mean to say the account creation is FREE and it will definitely allow you to CHAT.

Never used the punch-outs before. But many of the Admins on the CHAT are aware of Component Studio and how to create the SVGs for the laser cutting process.

Cheers!

I'm assuming you're thinking

I'm assuming you're thinking of something like in Fireball Island?

My suggestion is to borrow the basic construction ideas from something that already exists, but obviously making your own thing, not actually taking someone else's intellectual property.

Check out The Game Crafer (TGC)

Here's another link to the LARGE custom "punch-outs":

https://www.thegamecrafter.com/publish/product/CustomLargePunchout

From here you can see a Table, Library and a Chest... All created using the Large format of the custom "punch-outs".

Believe TGC is the right resource (for a prototype). How you create them in China... That I don't know. My guess is that it will be similar but harder to explain (without pictures and visual aids).

Trust me: TGC is the simplest way to go. (Otherwise you can spend hours or even days trying to make your own pieces for a prototype).

Best of luck to you(!?)

TGC is great for custom

TGC is great for custom punch-outs. I made custom figures for my games there, plus I did a prototype print of the figures for my first expansion set.

Basically you have to set up paths in Illustrator (or equivalent, like Inkscape, or, I assume, TGC's custom program). Setting up punch-outs for a Chinese manufacturer is the same, except I didn't make my own ties there, just the paths.
