I think this just shows

I think this just shows that's there's a want and need for more diversity and competition in the industry and perhaps people are tired of MtG being the gatekeeper.

There is always ...

HearthStone by Blizzard. Larienna says that they are using the Magic game engine mostly and that Blizzard did NOT design their own system. Wizards Of The Coast designed this alternate engine...

You can check it out... It's FREE to play - obviously the game not the best game in all existence and is more "forward" than Magic (means the game is a simplified version of Magic)...

I suggest people who like Card Games or those who play Magic to give HearthStone a try...

Codex

David Sirlin, a tremendous designer, recently Kickstarted a game called Codex. It's purpose is to fix pretty every problem you have with Magic. Check it out:

One of MtG mechanics is actually a very good one. That I love to like to use myself. The attack and block rules are the ones that I talk about.

Well I guess for $350k+ it seems like there is a market for another Card Game in the Fantasy Genre...

No doubt I could ever create something "as good".

That's why I am trying to think of ways to "differentiate" MY GAME (Not sure what to even call it - yet) from the other duel games such as "Serpent's Tongue" (ST), "Codex", etc. Both use a "Book" format to store your cards. And ST has solo campaign adventures... Not sure how they work - but somehow they do.

I played "HearthStone" (HS) tonight and beat Anduin with the Paladin (as other have suggested on the forum). I got all nine (9) characters and was under the impression that the game was going to be FUN... now.

WRONG! You have to PAY $6.99 for each of the Adventure Series. So it's no more FREE ... Ugh! I knew there had to be a catch somewhere.

Sucks - I don't want to pay to play those adventures... I just downloaded the game because it was a CARD GAME.

You sacrifice time for money.

In Hearthstone, you sacrifice time for money. You can slowly gain in-game gold to purchase those adventures and card packs, so it just takes a lot longer to build a collection with the F2P way.

1) Fun has nothing to do with having or not having to pay.
2) Regular games are free.
3) Apart from buying, you get gold for completing daily quests and winning several matches in a row.

You don't _have_ to pay. By paying you simply save yourself from the so called "grind".
This is how virtually any "Free-to-play" game works.

You are right

@ElKobold + @jewelGames: yeah you are correct you can earn GOLD and pay for things that way...

But as ElKobold said, paying saves you from the "grind"... I didn't know that leveling up nine (9) characters to Level 10 each (which is a task in itself) is possible and you earn more cards along the way.

However it's not FUN - to have to level up nine (9) characters. You're playing enemy AI - and it can be sometimes boring... So yeah that's the "grind" as you put it.

The "grind" IMHO is not FUN... It's a tedious task - that is very repetitive. Playing the adventures seems like a BETTER option. It costs 700 gold. I have 100 gold...

I understand F2P doesn't mean that it's always going to be fun... Like you said, leveling up characters is a requirement if you want ALL the BASIC cards for each class. And you do. Otherwise you cannot choose any character for your games - because that character doesn't have enough of the base cards required for a real match-up.
