The Thursday night chats seem to have settled down nicely now, and we'd like to thank everyone who has attended so far.

For the record, here is the schedule we had agreed (with the relevant host named):

Jan 15 - Scurra - "Princes of Florence"
Jan 22 - Zaiga - "Puerto Rico"
Jan 29 - Scurra - "Die Siedler (Settlers) (plus other versions)"
Feb 05 - Zaiga - "El Grande"
Feb 12 - Scurra - "Medici"
Feb 19 - Zaiga - "Euphrat & Tigris"
Feb 26 - Scurra - "Ohne Furcht und Adel (Citadels)"
Mar 04 - Zaiga - "Taj Mahal"
Mar 11 - Scurra - "Carcassonne (plus other versions)"
Mar 18 - Zaiga - "Ra"
Mar 25 - Scurra - "Union Pacific"

If anyone has a specific request for a game to be discussed, please drop Zaiga or myself a line.

We changed the schedule a bit. The new schedule is:

Mar 11 - Zaiga - "Taj Mahal"
Mar 18 - Scurra - "Carcassonne (plus other versions)"
Mar 25 - Zaiga - "Ra"
April 1 - Scurra - "Union Pacific"
April 8 - Zaiga - "Amun-Re"

If you have a request for a chat about a specific game, you can drop Scurra or me a PM.

And another adjustment...

Mar 11 - Zaiga - "Taj Mahal"
Mar 18 - Scurra - "Carcassonne (plus other versions)"
Mar 25 - Scurra - "Union Pacific"
Apr 1 - Zaiga - "Ra"
April 8 - Zaiga - "Amun-Re"
April 15 - Scurra - "Alhambra"
April 22 - Zaiga - ???
April 29 - Scurra - "New England"

any more suggestions for games welcome...

My suggestions:

"Wallenstein" -- one of my favorites; a masterpiece of "restricted action selection", with probably the most interesting randomized combat system out there. Very rare, a game that merges German design with combat successfully. (On the downside, most on the group won't have played it, though it is ranked 12 on BGG)

"Lord of the Rings" -- a cooperative game? A Knizia game dripping with theme? What makes this confluence of paradoxes tick?

"Axis and Allies" -- the game most of us grew up playing (at least here in the US). What is good, bad, or ugly about this design that has proven the test of time?

"Advanced Civilization" -- another game many have played -- a couple of times, anyway. What is it about this game that makes people willing to invest a day of their lives playing it? What attempts have been made to provide a "shorter" version?

(In that vein, perhaps Vinci, Mare Nostrum, or La Citta could come up as well/instead...)

"Acquire" -- not sure if we discussed this one yet, but this is the granddaddy of "German" games. A one page rulebook yet with deep gameplay...

"Attika" -- a management game disguised as a connection game. What's the story with the game that has attracted the most "buzz" of late?

Ooh... I don't know if enough people had played it, but I think deconstructing Fresh Fish could be a marvelous exercise...

Jeff makes some good suggestions:

"Wallenstein" -- great idea. Zaiga, have you played this?
"Lord of the Rings" -- was on my original list and went missing for some reason.
"Axis and Allies" -- yes, probably deserves to be there, if only to talk about scope issues.
"Acquire" -- indeed.
"Attika" -- still very new (although having said that, I've got Alhambra on the list and that's only just appeared in an English edition!)

plus:

"Age of Steam" is going on just as soon as I do better than coming horribly last in it (so that might be a while yet :))
"Tikal" and "Torres" will be on if I can persuade Zaiga to host them (they're possibly my least favourite games ever!)

Joe, I've only played "Fresh Fish" once, a long while ago, and haven't picked up the new version, so I probably couldn't talk about it sensibly.

I only played Fresh Fish once myself, though I'll agree that it's a fascinating game. Friedemann is a very clever guy. :)

There hasn't been a thursday chat for the last 3 weeks or so. Are you guys on a temporary hiatus or is the experiment over until the fall?

Um, temporary one I think.
We haven't had much attendence at the last few, but that's partly because of a lack of schedule!

How about:

  • Tongiaki
  • Web of Power (out of print though, and my copy grew legs)
  • San Marco
  • Diplomacy

You could also have a 'classics' section:

  • Risk
  • Stratego
  • Othelo
are just some ideas. Even though we've played the 'classic' board games more times than we would like to admit, some of them have elements that are good (aand plenty of stuff to avoid as well).

I've never player Torres, but I doubt I'll ever play Tikal again (unless during a Indiana Jones marathon maybe).
