Help for a Novice?

Hi, Gameboys! I have been approached by Scholastic to design a series of games for use in the elementary school. They want me to come up with a prototype and a suggested fee...and I don't know where to start! I realize there is lots of good info at this site but I'm sort of overwhelmed. I have the game idea pretty well figured out in my head but I don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions would be MOST appreciated!
Thanks,

Blimey, that's the way round you want to do it: get someone come to you and say they want a game and will you design it for them?

(I have to admit that that's how my first published* commission came about too; and it's slightly depressing when you've got a stack of designs that are all inappropriate for the spec :)

*I say "published" but it hasn't been, so far. Now I know how those authors whose works are optioned by film companies feel. Still, I've been paid (a tiny fee!) for it, so I don't mind that much... Trust me, when it makes it out, I might just get around to mentioning it here ;)
