Working on board and unit size

Today I've been cracking away at creating a small enough board that can support an RTS type game (if you've been following my process). It's going to be two player but four play can be possible. I'm thinking that the board will be a grid on some sort of playing field with graphics (grass, mud, dirt etc.) my question is what would be a good size for each grid square to support around 15 buildings per player and several units?

It sounds like it would need

It sounds like it would need to be fairly large. Without knowing much about your game, I get the impression that would require quite a few spaces. If up to 30 (60 in 4 player) spaces can be covered with buildings, then the board would need to have a lot of room to still allow for movement, etc. In my opinion, a 30"x30" board is really pushing the upper limit on board size.

But I guess that leads me to a question; can multiple buildings share a space? If that is the case, then perhaps fewer spaces are necessary.

Perhaps the best approach to the problem is to first determine how many spaces you expect to need. Then determine the maximum size you are willing to make your board and start with spaces that give you that size. If, after playing on it, it feels like the spaces could be smaller, then use the information you have gained to make a more accurate guess.

I hope that helps!

Yes!

It seems like a guess and check is in order here. This weekend ill provide feed back on how it feels!

Sounds Cool

I just read a bit of your blog, and your game sounds interesting. I look forward to hearing more about its progression!
