Tbone's blog

Dotacular WIP

Hello everyone, Tbone here bringing you another one of my ideas. I've been bit by the publishing bug and want to pursue getting my first game published by Game Crafter. I know, not a huge deal but it was on my bucket list this year.

Card Workshop

I've been fiddling around with Word and came up with this design (for testing and prototyping)... *Note* artwork was found on google images

Gravity Giant:

Typically cards will have abilities in the lower rectangle but this card has the Grunt badge which indicates the absence of abilities and its focus completely on killing enemy Mentumorphs (enemy cards). Its also a Legendary card (indicated by the red background) which means there is only one of these in the entire deck. Its extremely strong because it doesn't cost any Mentum Resources (Action Points) to move or kill with this card.

A Monumental Advance

Isn't wonderful how one simple change can leave the game running in a totally different direction? These past few weeks I have treaded through a complete turn around (for the better) in my game Battle of the Aces (so much that the name will be different). Same mechanics just organized differently.

The theme of the game was close to none; no real depth in meaning. Until I decided to patch the enormous hole in my game design; the none existant theme.

The Return

Haven't been on in awhile.

I was thinking about my RTS board game the other day and came up with the idea of putting a seventh option on the card--a unit and building option. This way you can decide to put them down from your hand after you buy them.

The board will also look different.

Danger danger

As many of you may know I'm making an RTS type board game. And the other day I was testing and found the beginning took too long. So, I thought maybe taking out the builder (the unit that allows you to create buildings) would make it a lot faster. Am I delusional and naive or is it okay to take out one of the most critical and basic unit? I was thinking that the player instead could pick where he wanted the building. Of course there would be a meridian line of somesort that wouldn't allow you to build in your enemies territory but this has been troubling me

Critique, criticize, comment!

Taking turns is giving me trouble...

So far two things have given me trouble:

Taking turns mechanics
The precision of units moving

Since the person who goes first has an advantage of moving first but the Person who goes second has the advantage of seeing what the enemy has done to counter it. Is there anyway to make the turns easy and less lop sided?

Also, since the unit size determines their mobility (how many spaces per move point the can move). But the area the units can attack from dont always match up, resulting in over lapping units... How do I avoid petty problems like these?

Testing issues

Testing is going well. Not many bumps. The only problem with using graph paper for the units and buildings is that they can be knocked off its position on the grid very easily. Would card stock work better? Any suggestions on final out come? Cardboard? Foam? Plastic?

Progression

The new board is in place and I'm creating the units to go with it. The grid squares are going to be a half an inch by a half an inch. The board is about 1 and a half foot by 2. This will change or fluctuate depending on how gameplay goes. The only thing I'm still struggling with is the amount of chance presented in the game.

Working on board and unit size

Today I've been cracking away at creating a small enough board that can support an RTS type game (if you've been following my process). It's going to be two player but four play can be possible. I'm thinking that the board will be a grid on some sort of playing field with graphics (grass, mud, dirt etc.) my question is what would be a good size for each grid square to support around 15 buildings per player and several units?

Decisions, decisions...

I think I will be creating a board for my RTS board game. Should I make it four player? Check out my other blog post which has the mechanics of the game and let me know!
