I have joined BDGF yesterday as I am about 50% though development of a new game and may need pointers. Can anyone offer any comments at this stage

Well I can give you loads of comments, but you'll have to be a bit more specific on what you want to hear about. Until then, I suggest you use the search option of this site, or just browse through the posts in a random order. When I first came here, I was a bit dumbfounded by the overload of information. So youmight want to stick to reading the new posts only for a while.

Welcome aboard EMB,
You could also go through the "Topics in Game Design" forum. There's also a lot interesting discussions and the topics are clearly defined. And Aerjen's idea to use the search is a very good one, to find anything related to your game theme or mechanics.
