Firstly, let me start off by saying that i think "BGDFers" sounds pretty cool and maybe even badass...maybe...

Anyway, over on the Geek there was a thread about what everyone does when not gaming and linking it to a boardgame. So, I thought everyone over here was just as cool and, being fairly new here, I look forward to getting to know everyone around here better.

Alright then - let's see how diverse we are! What is it that occupies your time when not gaming/designing? (and if you really want you can list a board game that represents it, but I dont know enough games to do it for me...)

I work for a huge lawfirm in DC as a Conflicts Research Assistant. That pretty much means "database jockey," but this is a great 1st job and I hope to move on pretty soon to something more geared towards international relations research.

I'm a software engineer; I work a regular day job and in the evenings I write and sell my own software (for Macintosh computers) on the Internet. My major hobby is performing 1920's-era jazz on cornet and trombone. I'm also a fencer, though not a very good one yet -- check back with me in ten years or so on that. :) And in my copious free times, there are the games...

I'm a graduate student seeking employment (Recently graduated) who also has a freelance art business (though it's rather slow at the moment). I also do a bit of Historical Interpretation (Reenacting geared more towards teaching) for the French and Indian War and Lord Dunmore's War.

I am a Structural Engineer by day, and a crime fighting Superhero by night. As the latter I protect mankind from the dasterdly deeds of DrMayhem and his band of thugs and hoods. As the former I protect mankind from the dasterdly deeds of Dr Contractor and his band of Lazy Laborers.

I am an old student who first studied as a computer technician and has now started to study again has a library technician. I never had a serious job, I am now a worker in a book warehouse. I am planning going out of the city and if thing goes badly maybe living in an eco-village or becomming a farmer.

Of course, if magic would have existed in this world, I would have became a powerful sorcerer with a fairy as familiar on my shoulder. But unfortunately, I can't, Snif! (~_~)

Well that explains a lot.

As for me? I do stuff to pay the bills and then other stuff I actually enjoy doing the rest of the time; usually writing and solving puzzles - I'm playing* in several ARGs which take up far too much time.
(*and writing my second small-scale one atm.)

I write letters for the provincial government and teach Continuing Studies computer courses over the web. I also completed a master's in Creative Writing and write young adult fiction *much* less zealously than I should.

These days, I mostly chase my toddler around the house. That's her undercover rabbit to the left.

By day, I am a logistics guy in a hospital in the operating wing. A week later (or some weeks later) I am the very same at night, or afternoon-and-evening or early-morn-till-noon, then again during weekends.

The job consists of getting everything where it is supposed to be in time... So I'm running around (often litterally running) in a green outfit on green plastic clogs, a green hairnet/hat and a green muzzle-mask with a beeper and up to three 'dects' (= mobile radio-phones that do not interfere with medical machinery).

Things I carry around include: dope (lots of dope), blood and plasma (deepfrost, that plasma...), instruments that are weird, instruments that are downright scary, lots of stuff that is used in construction (of houses and things like that...), information (lots of information, but I try to give lots of that away through the dects...) and of course more and other stuff...

People often say that the beauty of people is hidden inside. Let me get that straight, I see a lot of insides of people, and most of them are NOT beautiful!

Cheese!

By day, I am a video game programmer for an Austin, Texas developer. By night, I am a video game programmer working overtime for an Austin, Texas developer. In my scant free time, I raise two small kids and try to pamper my wife to make up for all the overtime I work.

In my alter ego as Dr. Mayhem, I dabble in the occult in an attempt to lengthen the day to 26 hours so I can actually complete some game designs. Unfortunately, grandstanding do-gooders often misunderstand my work and try to stop me. I was most recently driven out of Tucson, Arizona by a superhero who moonlights as a structural engineer. I don't like to talk about it...

Excellent costume! As good as the one from Gogolsky's undercover teddy bear's. ;P

Due to the the hacking problems the forum suffered recently, my previous post on this thread dissapeared, so here I go again: I'm a graphic and web designer working at home since the birht of my daughter Catalina, currently twelve years old (Take that, Seth! Now try to repeat your joke about 12 y.o. births).

I'm usually quite busy, but that may be due to my tendency to post to this forums, read a book, watch some TV and go to the grocery store when I'm supposed to be working. So I tend to work when I'm supposed to be sleeping, and sleep when I just can't help it. I have managed to lenghten the day to well above 30 hours, but then the week misteriously shortens to only 5 or six days, and day become dark and nights sunny. I'll keep you posted if I manage to solve those tiny details. It's just a question of time, I 'm sure.

When I'm not glued to my PC I try to play tennis (with variable degrees of success), and as I mentioned in my lost post, my first attempt at creating a game (in recent times, I had a couple games created in my youth, but lost the rules) was a tennis game that actually feels like real tennis, and I failed miserably (the game actually had some merit in realism and simulation, but was toooooooooo slooooooooowwwwwwwwww).

I manage an Imaging Department for the University of Texas. Not a whole lot to say about my work, I just make sure that thousands upon thousands of pieces of paper make it through a scanner everyday.

I have been playing and designing games (mostly role-playing games) for well over half of my life as a hobby. I have always had friends willing to play test my creations (even my really bizarre ones). A couple of years ago I started focusing on board game and card game design. I love designing games as a hobby, and I have finally realized that I would like to make it my business. I have also done work as a freelance artist here and there. Over the past year I have really gotten into digital art. I really love working in 3D, so I am creating all the art for my games now using 3D software.

I also just started teaching my 2 year old daughter how to play drums.

My entry was lost too but to blame the hackery is too easy. I blame Sedjtroll.

I write software for and help design pinball machines. I have done this for over 16 years. It can be fun but its long hours and very stressfull at times. The first 10 years I worked for Williams Electronic Games were I contributed to many great games unitl they closed down their pinball division. I now work for Stern Pinball the only remaining pinball company.

I have a great family including a wife and two young boys. I try and see them as much as they will let me.

When I have some alone time I spend it on Games, Magic (tricks), or Programming.

By day (or night, whenever they tell me too) I teach avionics for fighter aircraft for the USAF near Wichita Falls Texas. Trying to teach up to 8 new airman at a time how to operate radios and landing systems for the A-10, sometimes it's fun, other times, not so much. As for free time I like to spend time with my wife of 13 years, walk our 3 dogs, ride my bike (not nearly as much as I should) read all kinds of books, and watch movies (although I am VERY picky about those, I can't stand alot of the movies Hollowood puts out) When I get the itch (small case of OCD the wife tells me) I design games, sometimes for a week at a shot in every spare moment, other times I just tinker a few days at a shot. I have 5 plus years left in the AF, only a few months left in Texas, then I have to figure out what I want to do when I grow up, now that is when life might get interesting.......

Be carefull with how you phrase your comments. I wrote "the birth of my twelve year s old daughter" and Seth posted a comment on how painful that birth should have been, the least he could do with your sentence is compare you to Jerry Lee Lewis... ;-)

Hmmm. Interesting. Im an application support specialist by day (read: tech support). I like to spend time with my wife and two small children. Besides 'designing' and playing games, I like to play tennis, basketball, and volleyball as well as watch good movies. Oh and I also run this website!

Compared to the rest of you so far, I'm pretty lazy! I also have a wife and 2 kids who I'm fairly sure are mine. Keeping their social life going means less free time, but you have to enjoy them while they're still young. I always thought the old folks that said "time flies" were full of it, but when I realize my 'babies' are already a teen and a pre-teen, I see the wisdom of those words!

Besides growing and raising my own gamers, I play World of Warcraft waaayyyy too much. I'm a book printer by trade - working with publishers to get their books through our plant on time, and with ALL the words in them HONEST! And most, if not all, of them are RIGHT SIDE UP too!

Can't think of a boardgame that would match - so I guess I'll take the easy way out and say the Warcraft boardgames....

I'm a game programmer by day. My hobbies include playing games, game designing, and other game-related activites. I'm not so well rounded. :) My wife is there to keep me in line and make sure I don't turn into a meeple.

Do you mean the A-10 thunderbolt II, the most cool looking bomber that can hold more weapons than you can possibly imagine? Wow, so cool!

I work for Edge of Reality. The Austin/Dallas region is the 3rd largest computer game development center in the U.S., so there are several studios here. Retro is one of the most well known. We also used to be home to Origin (makers of Ultima) and Acclaim Austin, but they've both gone under in recent years. That still leaves a Midway studio and several smaller 3rd party developers.

Which is way more information than you probably wanted. :P

I used to work in a interactive science musem untill an injury (permanant and ongoing complications from a dislocated shoulder) forced me to leave and will stop me from holding down a job (sucks). In my spare time (lots as I am out of work) I design board games and computer games. I also am a Home Theater nut and have a very nice setup (but it could be better if I had the money :D ).

How about changing BGDF to mean Badass Game Designers Forum :D

I'm an engineering mgr for a semiconductor co in Oregon. I'm also a submarine officer in the USNR, which eats up a lot of my spare time. Then there's the wife, the kid, the dog, the house, and all of the other things that come w/ life in suburbia. In my spare time (what there is of it), I play board games (duh), play EQII and other life sucking computer games, and read about fly fishing. That last hobby used to be actually fly fishing, but I can't manage to find time to do more than read about it anymore.

Oh yeah, some friends and I are also starting a game design and hopefully publishing business as well, which is why I've had the sudden interest in BGDF. We're hoping to release our first low volume (500 - 1000 units) game this fall to test the waters.

And sometimes I sleep. :-)

I've been putting things in order to go back to college in september. I'm planning to be a nurse. In three years and a few months time, I hope to reenter the operating wing as a nurse and say hi to all the people there I allready know... (=> read my previous post in this tread...)

It'll be wierd, though, back in college between students that will be generally 10-12 years younger than me. I think a lot of them will have different things on their minds than me...

Cheese.

I am a mathematics undergraduate, studying hard for my Numerical Anaylisis, Probability, Quantum Physics, History of Jazz, and Philosophy classes.

I am also a private Math Tutor, mostly specializing in Pre-Calculus & Calculus.

Any time I have left is pretty much designing and playing board games, card games, computer games, role-playing games, etc. Toning up my computer programming skills. Reading books, magazines, newspapers, and anything else I can read that I find interesting. Working on some of my Knot Theory ideas, and surfing the web.

I like how we all come from different walks of life, and different
situations, some of us going through tough times, others maybe
doing well.

anyhow very interesting.

Me.

I am a mechanical engineer who designs paper feed mechanisms (and recently, vertical marketing applications) for color laser printers. A printer I worked on recently won PC Magazine's editor's choice award.

When I am not working, I enjoy playing disc golf and various other recreational sports (soccer and ultimate frisbee, primarily). As a first-time buyer, I am quickly learning the joys of home ownership. Soon, I hope to build a fence able to contain a hyperactive weimaraner puppy. I also enjoy the competitive side of gaming and am looking to use game design as a creative outlet.
