Puerto Rico is rated as the #1 game on the BoardGameGeek (and a lot of other charts as well). Not only do a lot of people like it, there are also not a lot of people who *dislike* it. Why is Puerto Rico such a great game and what game mechanics make it tick?

In essence Puerto Rico is an ordinary resource management game about producing goods on a Caribbean island. You need plantations in the fields and corresponding buildings in the city.

You also need colonists to work on your plantations and in your buildings. Then you can produce goods which you can ship for victory points or sell for dubloons.

You can buy certain special buildings, which change the rules of the games for you and also give you some victory points. You can also have quarries, which reduce the cost of buildings.

Those are the game

The kingmaking aspect of who follows the beginner is slightly annoying, but in hindsight, I think it

I just got Puerto Rico for christmas and absolutely love it.

I almost won the first time I played with the mass corn-production ship off strategy. I lost by two points because my brother managed to buy a large building that gave him a lot of victory points.
