Oh wow. And I thought it was funny when two of us entered the same game last month... Then again, it was a rather precise specification this time round :-)

...and good luck right back to you!

This one looks like it's going to be a bit tough to judge... the requirements were quite restrictive, so a lot of the games are very similar to each other, at least at first glance. It's difficult even to read them through in one sitting. I'm taking this one slow, reading only a few entries at a time so that the merits of each can be absorbed properly.

I did the same thing, I read all the games and my brain melted trying to tell them apart.

However with a second reading differences appeared and I have a good feeling now for how the games play.

Any advice on voting?

Pick the 2 you like best give them 5's? Spread the love? Vote 4,3,2,1? Vote with your heart? Vote with a Dart? Go eat a tart?

Just send a PM to Bryk reading "I want to give 5 points to Seo's entry, two to Doho's for not hosting this month, and spread the other three points left among any the other entrants." ;-)

Wow -- that was cold! ;-) And, I hear you have a habit of winning when doho hosts ... ;-P

I really don't care who hosts, I just want to win all the time. ;-)

Hey, once upon a time there used to be more updates to the front page in regards to the GDS...

We would get a challenge announcement, a bulletin that voting was underway, and an announcement of the winner... lately it seems that some of those have slipped away.

So, admins, might I humbly request that those updates be reinstated? They give the GDS a lot more hype and keep it from slipping away down the list of recent posts and off the page....

Thanks,

~Josh

It's a little help Bryk is giving me, Josh.

I've been trying to win this thing for more than a year just to see my name on the front page news, and the two times I won they didn't mention it. So my motivation remains intact. :-)

Hey, seo, count yourself lucky. The best I've managed to finish so far is second, and that was when there were only two entries...

I wonder if that ought to tell me something about my actual games? ;-)

I only remember putting 1 up announcing it starting and 1 up announcing the winners. I don't remember putting up voting announcements except in the cases where I wasn't getting any votes.

In any case, I used to have admin rights to the front-page news area ... but darke turned those off for just about everyone as a means to eliminate the hijacking of admin accounts that were occurring with some of the hacking attempts.

I understand, of course.

So, uh, will we see a winner's notice this month? I only ask because I am going to win, and, you know, I'm incredibly vain.

Woo hoo! ... Part of the honour of winning (and I'm only guessing here, bacause my wins column is dead empty so far) must be the warm glow you get from seeing your name up in lights on the BGDF front page. Thank you very much.

LOL

I do indeed like it! If only people knew which game was yours, they could vote for you as you instruct!

I was a little quick on the draw there ... I should've said, "It depends on whether seo wins or not."

;-D

Everyone should feel free to vote. Just send me a PM and I'll take care of the rest.

Incidentally, what's with two of the games having "Lemon" in their title?

And all the vowels in the game names! I hate that! I am moving to iceland where they have moved beyond vowels.

Is "Lemon" as a word to refer to a oft-broken-down auto an American term?

I thought that was universal ... maybe only American cars break down? ;-p

Wikipedia to the rescue:

Quote:
Originally a slang term, a lemon is, like its citrus counterpart, known for its distinctively sour flavour. Some possible origins of the term include:

"A defective product, or anything that doesn't work very well; something which breaks constantly, particularly a car... A "lemon" is a citrus fruit with a tart or sour (not sweet) flavour. In the 1800's, people started using the word 'lemon' to describe people who were sour (or unfriendly). Over time, 'lemon' came to refer to anything that was defective or broken."

"lemon: 'worthless thing', 1909, Amer.Eng. slang; from lemon (1), perhaps via criminal slang sense of 'a person who is a loser, a simpleton', which is perhaps from the notion of someone a sharper can 'suck the juice out of'. A pool hall hustle was called a lemon game (1908); while to hand someone a lemon was British slang (1906) for "to pass off a sub-standard article as a good one." Or it simply may be a metaphor for something which 'leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.'"

Once merely a statement of opinion (inferring that the purchase of a vehicle had in some way "gone sour" due to mechanical defects or concealed problems), the "lemon automobile" has also acquired a narrower, more well-defined legal definition as a result of the enactment of lemon laws in many jurisdictions.

Very disappointed in the voting so far ... 8 entries and only 4 votes.

Of course, there are a small handful of hours left to get your vote in.

I'm thinking from the responses (entries & votes) to the GDS lately, perhaps we need to move to a less frequent format ... every other month, or once per quarter, perhaps?

... or maybe a news item on the front page announcing that voting is open, and what the deadline is?

It seems strange to me that the people who made games wouldn't even take the time to vote....

I won't be able to tally the vote until later this afternoon, or possibly even this evening. I'll allow votes to be submitted right up until I calc and post the results.

Sorry for the delay.
