I will be showing my game at a toy and game fair in a few short weeks. Has anyone else shown their game at one of these fairs? I am a little nervous, could you fill me in on any info. What type of atmosphere is it, how busy, did you have any offers on your game? Was it worth it and would you do it again? If a publisher was interested in my game at the show, then what? Would I just give them my business card or would they want to write something up right there?
Obviously this is my first game and show, thanks for any help!

I forgot to mention that I do not have a trademark or copywrite on my game, do you think that I have much to worry about or would mailing my game to myself be sufficient?
The show is in 3 weeks so I am not sure if I could get a copywrite & trademark by then, even if I wanted to or if it is even necessary.

Mailing it to yourself is something of an urban myth. You have a copyright when you put it into a fixed form. You have a registered copyright when you register it. It's cheap to register it.

It's much more expensive to register a trademark.

Copyrighting your game won't prevent people from building a knockoff game. Only a patent will do that.

Go to my website in the game design section and check out the Game Law page. It's got lots of links explaining game copyrights, trademarks, and patents.

You probably aren't going to get people wandering around to sign a non-disclosure agreement, for what it's worth.

Which show are you going to, BTW?

Toy Fair

Are you based in UK? Is it the upcoming Toy Fair...because I'll be attending that too!

Although my attendence will be based from a business perspective. I do have my own card games but I also publish them myself, so my aim there is to establish some connection with educational game manufacturers that may be suitable for schools. I will be then advertising them directly to all state schools in England.

Also will be looking for companies that may look into getting their card decks printed through me!!

Good luck Lee.

Thank you for the info. I will be at the Toronto Toy and Game Fair this weekend.
Is it common for game manufacturers to actually come up to you at these events with interest in signing a publishing agreement with game inventors or would this be very rare?
I am not even sure how I would handle a situation like this if it were to happen.
Has anyone had their game published by a game manufacturer who could share a bit of info. on details about the publishing agreement?
Things to do and not to do?

Thanks again, this site is awsome

This would in fact be VERY rare. If this is a consumer show there will be little for you to do there except demo it. If it is a trade show manufacturers are looking to sell not buy.

A good forum for meeting with manufacturers directly to both get advice and possible deals is the TGIF (toy and game inventors forum) as the manufacturers attend and I know of three licensing deals that were done just this past year. The website of this forum is www.tgifhome.com .

Thanks and I hope this helps.

GAMA

Lee,

If you’re anywhere near Las Vegas, go to the GAMA Trade Show March 13-16. It’s focused totally on games, you pay $125 at the door (pre-registration is already closed) and you don’t even have to be a member of GAMA to go to any of the seminars.

For general information about GTS 2006 go to: http://www.gama.org/gts

Check out the seminars available at: http://www.gama.org/shows/gama_trade_show/2006schedule
