I just had an idea lately. Toy play sessions are used to explore new mechanics or find new contents for existing mechanics. The idea is simple, you play a fictional board game like a toy or a like a solo RPG. You improvise as you play. You do not need to have strict rules to follow, but having components to play with is very useful.
In order to maximize what I can extract from a toy play session, I was thinking that maybe logging everything that is happening in the game could be useful. I was thinking of making the following logging categories:
A. Actions the players makes
B. Actions the opponents or AI makes
C. Events that occurs in the game.
Do you think a logging mechanism could indeed be useful?
It's an indirect way to tell a story like a solo RPG. It could be too heavy to maintain, it would need to be written while playing.
Can you think of other categories of items to include in the log?
I also though that toy play could also be done almost as a pen and paper game. There is a bit more limitations, and writing the log by hand might be more tedious, but it's doable.
I started taking notes on my tablet by typing with the virtual keyboard. It`s manageable to note down ideas quickly or on the bus.
I don't need to transcribe the information afterwards, just need to download it.
It does not works well when sketches are necessary.
