I just got the e-mail that tells me that my game and I are going to the next local Unpub Mini at Gamercon! This will be my first time showing anything at a convention as a designer so I'm super nervous! I was wondering if anyone had any advice/experiences they can share. At the last convention I went to (as a visitor, not as a designer), some of the designers in the Unpub section gave away things like T-shirts or stickers to playtesters. Is that common/recommended or is that just something extra some people do?
Unpub Mini Advice?
I did a podcast on this very thing a couple weeks ago:
http://www.boardgamedesignlab.com/getting-the-most-out-of-a-design-conve...
The podcast covers the important universal stuff. Events, groups develop individual personalities, but here are two thoughts (public as they may apply tangentially to others)
1. The organizer is a great guy, one of the first I met getting back into the industry, and someone who is not ridiculously overscheduled and overobsessed with publicity, so he'll have time to think, and talk. He sets the tone for the people he attracts and they are good folk. The energy level is far from lax, but it's not frenetic.
2. I was going over the list of designers and products: some may still have handwritten components, but many have been in development a long time. Do not let that intimidate you: the designers brought them to these same events in their nascent form.
3. What to bring? I suggest cheap business cards, extra supplies for your prototype (I always bring a few extra of my dice, as they're custom (printed labels) and if one gets lost...)
Anything else? Feel free to PM (I'll be there Saturday only, for a big chunk of time, look forward to seeing Crazy Commute.)
Thanks for the great podcast!
