Out of curiosity, how do you guys feel about different sized cards, one bring paying card size, and the other being (not ostentatiously) a little bigger?

For example, how do you feel about the difference in the card size when creating your creatures in Darwin's Choice?

Can't wait to hear your thoughts,

Jessi

Do you have examples of games

Do you have examples of games that do this already? I can't think of a game recently that I've played with more than one card size type.

Darwin's Choice is the first one that comes to mind.

....That's the only one I can find

Hmmmm, weird. Looks like an interesting game. I think it triggers my OCD a bit though, the cards not being the same size.

I think as adults we have a "mold"...

I think that when we look at the combinations of cards in "Darwin's Choice", most adults are a bit "confused" (maybe shocked) at how "wacky" the combos look...

But I dare say, KIDS probably LOVE the "wacky" combos because kids don't have more rigid "expectations" when it come to card games.

As adults we have a "normal mold" where things line up properly and work together... "Darwin's Choice" breaks that mold even if there is SOME structure. Things like BODY cards come in only ONE (1) LARGER size.

More chaotic would be different sized cards for each animal/creature part. It could be possible, it would just mean each deck would have a variety of body parts not only the "body" or the "head".

That would probably create even MORE "confusion" for adults. But I think you get the general direction I am going with this... The less standard, the more "confusion" (for adults). For kids, it's probably the opposite!

That makes a lot of sense.

That makes a lot of sense. Too many different sizes would definitely be confusing, if not a little annoying to hold in your hands since the other players will know what you've got.

On the other hand, I found

On the other hand, I found stumbled into this PnP game by another game designer who is using the different card sizes in a way I found interesting and fun. Basically different sized cards for the Goblin (small) Orc (bigger) and Troll (biggest) definitely cool idea.

I know this is an older

I know this is an older thread but what the heck. Here's my two cents.

In short, it all depends. Outright, no cards of varying sizes aren't bad, but it depends on how you are implementing them. If players have to directly handle and manage hands with various sized cards then I would have to say that would be quite annoying and difficult, especially if the varying sized denote cards types. Players will know what the cards might be based on size and if your game has a mechanic where players can steal from others, well...you can see how that would be bad.

If players don't directly handle cards. Let's say the sizing of cards that are played on the table versus managed in hand are different, then totally fine. The larger cards function as a board essentially in that case.

So, I don't think cards of differing sizes are bad as long as it fits the theme of the game and their sizes help reflect their purpose. I can't think of any card games that do this, but the two games I can think of are Covert and Mysterium. Both are board games.

hello. to echo birblady. i

hello. to echo birblady. i haven't played darwins choice but there a a few games with different sized cards. bigger cards tend to be for admin (character cards etc) or maps.
cards in hand tend to be the standard size (roughly, MTG cards are a bit bigger etc) for a couple of reasons. 1: they shuffle easily (huge and tiny cards are a pain) 2: the fit in an adult hand easily (for fanning, or concealing) 3: cost ( all companies print poker size as a minimum)
mixing card sizes is fine just not inthe same place.
it would be interesting to see a game for different ages that uses bigger cards for younger players and standard cards for adults.
