Am I the only one disheartened by the fact that Reiner Knizia and Richard Garfield are both mathematicians. It's not that I'm uneducated (true I'm pretty stupid but I have a MSc degree) but that seriously makes me wonder what I'm even bothering trying for. I guess I can hope the sun may even shine on a dog's ass.

There are not only Knizia and

There are not only Knizia and Grafield. There are hundreds of game designers who are mathematicians.
But there are also teacher, architects, hauswifes, actors, craftsmen, murses, journalists ...
No nead to worry about not beeing a mathematician.

It's dedication I think...more than background

Honestly, scarier than his PhD in Mathematics are the 70-80 hours a week that he puts into game designing.

How many hours do you guys spend on it?

Did you hear this from an interview? Being that he also travels a great deal and attends convensions it seems extreme.

That must be an old interview. It is defiantly his job these days which seems primarily concerned with licensing as many games as possible. That means pumping out a lot of children’s games and rethemeing old titles. He doesn’t do much of what made him famous among gamers anymore which was making compelling strategy games.
