I am, perhaps, being overly sensitive, and am, perhaps, allowing the fact that both VeritasGames and Brahmulus have irked me before get in the way of sound judgement now, but I'm fed up with both of them, especially the latter.

FYI, I sent this PM to Brahmulus tonight:

Quote:
Here's the deal: stop posting in the copyright thread. Whether you genuinely think I'm misinterpreting your attitude or you're actually the jerk I'm reading you as doesn't matter. Your last two posts were every bit as unacceptable as the one I commented on.

And as for how I'm doing my job, I'm completely uninterested in your opinion.
So... there may be fallout. Hope it doesn't land in any of y'all's soup.

I'm with you on Brahumus, he sounded condescending since his first posts. Hopefully, he will stop this attitude.

The copyright thread is interesting but pretty much everything has been said. As I haven't participated in the thread, I will close it.

That's fine by me. I've had similar disputes with Lee about a NDA thread. I locked that particular thread, and it died and he's obviously still here. He seems to be getting 'better', at least in his last comment in the thread. If there's more 'garbage' from Brahm, delete his replies and lock the topic.

So, here's Brahmulus's response:

Quote:

Very rude Mathew.

You are singling me out.

Not good.

I'll see if there is anything else I have left to say about patenting, other than that I'd rather get back to design talk myself.

Then he replied.

Anyone see a reason I shouldn't kick him?

Never mind. I banned his IP and changed his password (no need for his messages to disappear).

I also deleted his whiny and continually derogatory post. Should have posted it here so y'all could read it, but it's too late.

Probably should have waited until morning. Alas, always with the hindsight.

So... he was still logged in, and posted again in that thread.

So I deleted it again, and deleted his account.

Yeah, me neither. I know he posted yesterday in the Doho's thread and it wasn't about Doho's thread but rather the continuation of the Tom Jolly's patent thread... sigh. He's a real pain, but a ban and account delete? Ouch, that's harsh. I guess it's too late now.

His attitude drove josdan from bgdf. :(

Edit: Actually, if he was "spamming" in the sense of posting several messages even after you delete them and tell him to stop... that's enough for a ban in my book.

I also regret deleting his account. I wish there was a way you could kick someone off, but the cookie keeps you live and able to post until some future point... when you have to log in, I guess. Anyone know how to actually suspend someone's activity?

Here's the sequence of events last night:

I come to the site and see that Brahm is online. I see that he's posted in one of the new copyright threads (doho's). He's whining about being mistreated, he's got references about "if I'm allowed to post" and such. He continues his "subtle" attacks, replying to all of the old threads and posts and using his "sense of humor" in the very same ways. It's a very long post.

I check my PMs. He posts saying that he's going to post about the copyright stuff anyway, and that I'm being rude (see above).

I delete his response. I send him an IM and he doesn't reply. Maybe he's not really there, I reason. He's still showing as online.

I ban his IP and change his password, to keep him from re-logging in. But he doesn't have to log in, because his cookie keeps him logged in.

I send him an email saying that his account is suspended for posting in the copyright thread even though I specifically said not to.

He re-posts his entire rant in doho's copyright thread again.

This is where I wish we had the power to kick people, so you can actually suspend them.

So I delete his post again. I send him another IM, as clearly he's online, and I know he reads the IMs because we've IMed before. In addition, he always posts from the same IP and is posting from that IP at that moment, so I know he's not on some other computer.

Here's where I basically screw up, though I don't know what else to do here: it's late, and I "know" that his post is going to reappear again at some point, or some other post. He's not replied to my IMs or my email. So... I kick him out the only way I know how, and delete his account. Should have waited until morning and just let him post whatever in the meantime, in retrospect, as it couldn't have done much harm.

I send him an email telling him that his account has been deleted.

So, that's how it went down. It really stuns me that I can ban his IP and he can continue to post. Something's screwed up there.

All of that said, I apologize to you all, especially Darke. My sense of parental behavior modification was inappropriate, as was my anger. I'm going to leave all such things, including instructing members on how to behave and certainly deleting an account, to y'all in the future.

The only "mistake" I think that Matthew made was to make an administrative decision while angry. I think that waiting for a day to cool down would have been a better path.

However, I think that the conclusion you would have come to after that cooling off still very likely should have been to delete his account. Brahmulus/Goldar is the worst kind of member: a prolific poster who has absolutely nothing to say, but just wants to display his immature sense of humor. (His "unlikely heroes" thread was some of the most obnoxious self-indulgent garbage I have ever read in my entire life) I put him at age 16 max.

But now, he has most definitely crossed the line. I have never seen anyone threaten violence against someone in a game group before. He probably thinks that it's just another joke. I don't think there's anything funny about what he has said.

We need to have a way to prevent people from accessing the site and posting again, creating new accounts, whatever. This guy is as good a candidate as we've ever had for that treatment. I have no idea how this can be done, but if someone figures it out, please let the rest of us know (or at least, let us know that you know how to do it, so that if someone needs to be excommunicated, we at least know how to get the process going).

In the meantime, Goldar is filling the forums with deragatory comments about the admins. I wonder if an actual forum post from the admins laying out the facts of the situation, including selections (or full text) from the posts that we've deleted and the IM conversations that we've had with him, might be appropriate to keep us on the up and up. Not that anyone in the community would actually side with him rather than us, but just so that people might feel more confident in shouting him down if he starts up the "admins are jerks" claptrap.

This guy is poison, and Matthew, I feel, did exactly the right thing. I hope that you won't refrain from these kinds of judgement calls in the future, although I can understand if your enthusiasm for doing so is somewhat spent. We shouldn't have to teach basic manners to people, and for the most part, the people our site attracts are all stable, clear-thinking folks. It's very annoying to have a loud, irrational person who's determined not to go away. We need a protocol to be able to deal with such people.

-Jeff

PS I suspect this you guys know this already, but I'm not saying this simply because Brahmulus was a jerk to me. I wouldn't have kicked him out over the comments he made to me, although I did think Matthew's plea for more polite discourse was appropriate. But his behavior and open defiance of Matthew's authority is unacceptable, and it's for that reason (and the threats of violence) that I say he has to go.

We can ban the IP he's using site-wide. The webserver will deny all request from that IP. That won't stop him using another computer or a proxy.

Edit the .htaccess file.

order allow,deny
allow from all
deny from 70.180.196.54

I don't have shell access anymore so I can't do it myself.

I think he was chronologically older than that, but he was *much less* mature than some of our members who we know are in their mid-teens.

I think the proper end-result was reached.

We may want to write up and publish an easy-to-find "Terms of Service" or "Forum Rules" post. Here's an example of a simple one that has been working quite well for a war-gaming community I take part in: http://www.kaomaris.com/phpNuke/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=397

Of course, we probably want to add in rules about respecting the admins/mods and an appeals process regarding the different types of bans and for locking threads. While work is still busy for me, I'd be happy to take a first swipe at such an animal, which would at least give us something to start with that everyone could make adjustments to.

Matt,

I'd love for you to do that when you get a chance. I'd greatly appreciate it. I assume such a thing could be easily duplicated on the wiki.

We may want to change this to 70.180.196.* , otherwise the next time his ISP assigns him an IP from the DHCP server, he'll be able to get around the ban. And even then, if he gets assigned an IP off of the 70.180.196.* range then he'll be able to dodge it still. I'd hate to make it 70.180.*.*, because in a sense we'd be banning 65 thousand IP addresses...

Perhaps we need to find out what range of IPs his ISP is handing out for that area and then ban accordingly.

To further that, Goldar/Brahm got on last night as a user named Chief (I.P. address the same and the e-mail address for him, info@zombiecity.com, led me to the zombiecity.com website, which clearly states at the bottom 'Website by Brahm'). I started IMing Chief, at first asking him how he was doing, welcome to the site, let me know if I could help, etc. Normal newcommer friendliness. He responded, acting like a foreigner who knew very little english. I asked him how he heard about the site, he replied google search... He said his Dad was a member here. I asked him who his Dad was on the site. He dodged the question. I asked again. Now he said his Dad didn't like to and/or know how to use computers. I finally had enough and confronted him about being Brahm/Goldar. He then said he was using his friend's cable modem. At that point I asked him to drop the charade, and that I would be willing to listen to his grievances.. But he 'stuck' to his foreign guy 'my english is bad' charade. I offered several more times to listen to his grievances, still nothing. I have no feelings of regret regarding the ban. It's obvious he has no respect for this community and that he thinks we are a bunch of fools, so at this point I'm shaking the dust off of my feet regarding Braham/Goldar/Chief.

In the future, instead of deleting the account, let's instead edit the user in the user DB. Change their password and change their e-mail address to a nonexistant address (or blank it) so they can't get their password reset. Reason: PHPBB has this nasty habit of removing every single post from a user after they've been deleted, which can leave some definite holes in the conversation threads.

You'll note above that that's exactly what I did, changed his password. But because his cookie wasn't expired, he continued to post, even re-posting when I deleted his post.

I agree about the ugly holes, but how do I expire someone's cookie so that they have to log in (and then can't because of the change)?

Ok I have a solution. Basically go into the PhpBB admin section (from the admin menu, hit forums). Then under the user menu (all the way at the bottom on the left), click on the management link. Type in the username and click 'look up user'. After that screen loads, go all the way to the bottom under Special Admin Only Fields... Click no for the option 'User is Active", also click No for the option 'User can Send private messages'. This will highly cripple the user. They won't be able to send PMs or even get to the forums and it doesn't matter if they're already logged in or not... This method will stop them dead in their tracks. I.E. Anytime they can be in the middle of reading a message, it doesn't matter. The next time they try to pull down information all they will get is a blank screen.. Thoughts?

Hey, what up?

It's Brahmulus,

You and I we're PMing to resolve and then i got nerfed again, so no way to communicate.

Restore my PM so we can resolve? Or are you over this (totally understand).

I can always just wait a few days and then create a new account with one of my virtual IP's to access forums and just start with a clean slate as well.

Lemme know.

Peace,

Folks.

I e-mailed Brahmulus... Here is his reply...

Quote:
WOOPS! I'm sorry, my bad.

it totally hit me after I re-read your email. I didnt recognize your
name, or the abbreviated BGDF believe it or not (I have it in favorites),
and I have been so busy on this TV show that my mind is in 1000
different places, apologies.

I heard you were trying to reach me.

Heres the nutshell you seek:

One day I saw I couldnt get into my account (didnt check and/or recieve
an email until much later), and I had no idea what was up... so I
created a new account called Goldar. If two accounts is rampant mis-use of
multiples I apologize, i just didn't know what was going on. Now I see
that Goldar is blocked as well, so I'm kind of over it for now.

FWIW that mathew kid flipped out on me with a pretty unprofessional and
nasty personal email saying "SCREW YOU" and "YOURE NOT WELCOME" and
then your other boy, Jawarend or whatever, said that you have no power
whatsoever and could never overturn mathews decision.

As a side note this was bad timing as I had just turned on the nextdoor
neighbor kid (who helps me in playtesting) to the forum as well.

So listen, as far as reinstating, no worries brutha, I'm gonna take
care of business here and then slide back in with a new account/IP in a
few days to see if anything is peaking my ineterest on the forum.

I really do get (and give!) alot on that forum, and intend to get alot
more!

Thanks Michael!

Gotta go,

Jeff, Matthew: Thoughts? Is he a big liar?

I'd really like to let him back on (in reality I see no way of really stopping him. He seems to have avenues of getting around any security we implement and an endless supply of e-mails to register from). And before you get upset, it's not because of what he did or didn't do, it's because I feel that keeping people from the site is not what we are about.

On the other hand. I really want to confront this guy about his awful behavior. He seems to be playing it off like he's the victim and he's had no part of this whole process which is complete BS in my eyes. I'm going to reply to him tonight but I wanted to get your thoughts first.

Here's the story on that "Matthew kid," and why "Brahmulus" is full of shit as far as I'm concerned.

He acted like an ass in the copyright thread.

I called him on it.

He wrote a nasty response and sent me a nasty PM.

I deleted his response.

I sent him this email:

Quote:

Your account is suspended. I specifically said don't post in the
copyright thread, and you did anyway. Where you whined about being
mistreated.

Screw that, bud. If you have a good reason I should unsuspend you, let
me know. Otherwise, best of luck with your boardgame design, and I
hope you find a community where your "sense of humor" is appreciated.

He sent me a nasty PM (I wish that deleting his account didn't delete his PMs. Bleh.).

Since he couldn't be truly kicked (or I didn't know how), he re-posted the very same post in the very same thread.

I deleted his account and sent him the following email

Quote:

Evidentally you can't take a hint, REposting about copyrights after I
deleted your message.

You are banned from the BGDF. Your account and all posts you've made
have been deleted.

Do not come back. You are not welcome, and I am not interested in why
you think I'm wrong.

He came back and created a new username (Goldar) and posted a big post in a new copyright thread, saying the same things from the old threads that I deleted.

I deleted that post.

He came back as a third username.

He sent Jeff that note via the Journals.

I banned his IPs.

So, in response to what he wrote:

Quote:

One day I saw I couldnt get into my account (didnt check and/or recieve
an email until much later), and I had no idea what was up... so I
created a new account called Goldar. If two accounts is rampant mis-use of
multiples I apologize, i just didn't know what was going on. Now I see

Doesn't change the half-dozen IMs I sent telling him to stop posting about copyright stuff, both as Brahm and Goldar. And he created Chief why?

Quote:

nasty personal email saying "SCREW YOU" and "YOURE NOT WELCOME" and

You've seen the emails, you decide.
Quote:

So here he specifically says he's going to go around the system, doesn't care.

As far as I'm concerned it's this simple: I made an administrative decision, he said "fuck you," I suspended him, he said "fuck you," I deleted his account, he said "fuck you," I banned his IP address and he said "fuck you."

Me, I don't think there's any reason whatsoever to allow this guy anywhere near the board. And I'll happily be the one who bans him again and again and again.

Ask yourself this: if you'd told him to stop doing something and he said "fuck you," and the same process repeated itself thrice more, would you think he was a good guy to have here?

If Reiner Knizia did that, I'd be banning his ass till judgement day, much less whiney-ass Brahmulus.

That's my take.

Well said.... and I agree 100%.

Here is my concern... He WILL be able to get around any bans we place upon him. Sure we can reban him as he makes himself evident, but then we have to second guess whether or not every new user that comes online is just another incarnation of Brahm. Is this what we want? And what if he wants some sort of retribution against us. I know we (Matthew and I) briefly discussed this in IMs, but I personally don't want that sort of heat on the site. It's bad enough when hackers attack us just because we run a specific software package. I can't imagine how bad it will be when/if someone actually has a grudge against us. I know you can't live in fear, but I'm trying to think realistically here, because it will ultimately be me cleaning up the mess left behind.

So my reason for contacting him is to lay out his offenses before him, let him own up to them and apologize, and then be reinstated, To me this seems better for everyone in the long run. Obviously he's not in the right state of mind or heart for that to happen at the moment. Honestly I hope he just gets tired of game design and just eventually goes away. This may happen if we smooth things out. He may go away eventually anyway. I'm just not sure I want to take that chance.

Matthew, If you feel really strongly about this, then I will accept your decision and he will stay officially banned. The last thing I want is rift between you and I to affect this community.

Michael, Matthew, everyone,

I have stayed back during this issue, but I have to put at least two cents into this issue. First we all want a safe and happy site, and members like Brahm, Gold, Chief.... are not good members when they use bad judgement like he did. With that said,

Michael you obviously trust Matthews judgement and character because you have known him for awhile and allow him to moderate your site. So let us not worry about what Brahm, Gold, etc.. might do. I know that you worry, and rightfully so, that the site my get trashed/hacked/abused, but we also owe it to all the other members to keep a pleasant site running, if Matthew did not do what he did, imagine what other members might do in the future?

Michael I also like that you are willing to talk with Brahm... and see if you can resolve the problems that occur. This also adds to the quality of the site, and this is not something that many (if any) other sites would bother dealing with. So you are going beyond the call of duty, but I think that is good (as long as you feel it is something you want to do).

So I would say that both of you are doing what is needed to keep order and peace on the site. And that is part of what makes this site so good! IMO!

My concern boils down to this: what do our actions today bode for the future?

If Brahm is allowed back in and acts like an ass... what do we do? How much of an ass does he need to be to go over the line (again)? If, for example, he pulled some shit and was actiively doing so and, say, Jeff banned him, would two strikes be enough? Or if Jeff (again, just an example) let him pull the shit and brought up the problem here, what would be our criteria for kicking him? And would we not kick him because he could be trouble?

I have the utmost respect for your opinion, Michael, and most especially the fact that yes, you are the one who will ultimately have to deal with the shit. And if you make the decision to bring him back on if he apologizes (or whatever your criteria are -- even no criteria), I will still have the utmost respect for you and will honor your decision, of course.

Nothing, unfortunately, will prevent this little tidbit from recurring in my mind every time I see him post (highlighting mine, in my head), keeping in mind that Interstate 10 runs through my town, about 2 miles from my house:

Quote:

I also have a concept where revenge can be taken against people who make snap judgements and abuse power. I havent narrowed it down much yet, but lets say there is a person who has offered a great deal to a community and recieved much praise from many for their ideas and help, but then one person in a power position (or at least they think they are in a power position) singles out that person for personal reasons and comes down on them hard in a cowardly way, even to the point of depriving the rest of the community from the incredible contributions that they have made for a long period of time. The players would then somehow be able to take a terrible revenge on the sad arrogant and bitter abuser when he least expects it. Maybe call it "Revenge on Highway 10" or something.

Just can't seem to get that out of my head when I consider saying "go for it."

This is false. What I actually said was:

Jeff wrote:

Darkhorse won't do anything to overrule Matthew in this instance, I can tell you that.

It's clear that he is trying to play the admins against one another, and I was trying to show him that his expulsion was not simply due to Matthew's decision alone, but that we the admins are more monolithic than he thinks. Whatever happens, we cannot allow this jackass to sew discord amongst us.

He is a known liar. We had this exchange, for example:

Brahm wrote:
Jeff wrote:

I doubt this story, and you're obviously lying about being able to see forum IM's. You clearly saw mine, for example, and I know that you and Matthew have traded IMs.

Saw your IM? Mathew on IM? Sir with all due respect I have never seen or used an IM on this forum in my life.

I could adduce more evidence to his bad character, but there's no need. The facts are simple:

-- He adds nothing of substance to the community, but instead, is obnoxious, rude, and irritating
-- He has given the middle finger to administration
-- He is completely unrepentant about his role in getting himself booted
-- He lies incessantly
-- He has threatened violence against a member

That last is enough all by itself. In my opinion, he can never, ever come back. You don't let Satan become a member of the church just to prove that the church has open doors. Brahm is not Satan, but he's doing a damned good impersonation, in my opinion.

The real kicker is, how do we keep him from coming back? He has bragged that he cannot be banned from any group, and it appears that he is actually telling the truth for once. I really don't want our role as admins to become "Brahm police", as that's a waste of all of our times, but rather than direct our efforts towards sniffing him out, we simply make it clear to him that he is not welcome to return under any circumstances. And then we do nothing. If we get a strong indicator that a new member is Brahm, we zap him. But if he returns and becomes a member in good standing, we don't worry about it too much, as we'll never know the difference.

Michael, I respect your viewpoint and understand where you're coming from: we want this to be an open, positive place. But Brahmulus has violated that. We don't owe him any courtesy. Read that post in the Limbo forum. He threatened someone here. This guy is nuts. We can't ever let him come back.
