Professional Board & Tile Production Techniques

I just completed a few new graphic interpritations of the game Puerto Rico, one of which can be found in a flash enhanced site I created for it:

http://www.michaeldoyle.com/PRege/LaCiudad.html

The site has directions for printing a board on 8.5"x11" paper and tiling them together to form a large board, mounting on illustration board and getting the boards to fold. Also included are instructions on mounting two sided tiles on the board. You can download the graphics from the site and print them as well. The writing still needs improvement, which I will be getting to, but it should be good enough.

I'll be working on another site, which should really be quite amazing, featuring a version of Age of Mythology using magnets and plastics – including a plastic board.

I went to the site to take a peek, since I played my first game of Puerto Rico last weekend and loved it. The site is truly awesome! Well worth a look if you like Puerto Rico.

That IS impressive. Very nice. How long did it take?

How would you feel about doing that kind of thing for a game made by BGDF members?

The download link didn't work for me.

BTW -- did you check with the manufacturer so you don't get your skull busted for copyright infringement?

You do good work. You don't want to get hazed.

Remember, he's not posting the game rules, or using the original artwork - those (plus the box art) are generally the only things that are copyrighted. So, he should be fine.

I'm concerned that the link didn't work for you. I haven't included a Flash sniffer, but perhaps Flash isn't installed or up to date. I assume your on a PC – what browser/version are you using? I'd like to look in to it as others may have similar problems.

In terms of manufacturer, yes, all the artwork is original and very different than before also I didn't include rules. It's not a standalone complete package but needs parts from the original. I also altered the name (descripter lines used as names also protect against trademark usage). This really is a site for enthusists and given the investment in time to make a board, I don't think it will cut into their business at all. However, I will check.

Thanks, Mike

Choice of Paper Important

I just wanted to chime in on the construction aspect of boards. Don't scrimp on the paper. A decent, thick, paper will preserve the color. You will find that when using chipboard use of a thinner paper will make the graphics seem a lot darker, especially after using the spray adhesive. I haven't tried this yet, but on my next board I was thinking of spraying a matte varnish on the back of the paper, letting it dry completely then affixing it to the board using spray adhesive. I'm thinking that the matte finish might cut down on the darkness of the color and keep the spray adhesive from bleeding through. Then again it might keep the paper from bonding to the chipboard too.

Anyone have any pointers on this???

Rob Stone

The download link takes me to:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewfile.php3?fileid=7299

where it says the page is unavailable. The Flash part seems to work fine. The download doesn't. The file isn't there at the above URL as best I can tell.

Yes, this links to boardgamegeek's pop up window where the contents are automatically downloaded. The first time I tried this, I thought nothing was happening too. The file is 9.7MB so when the blank popup goes up, you might have to wait a few seconds or longer for the download to start depending on your connection and others who are on their site. The window is blank though and the downloading automatic (nothing to click on). Hope this helps.

Thanks! Yes, I'm a graphic designer with some illustration skills, very passionate about boardgames and always looking for a fun project. I'm afraid, I'm not able to commit to projects that do not pay at this time though – my wife would kill me.

I have put up the site with the link above and will have another one with a different game Age of Mythology, which I'll have done in a few weeks with other production tips. This is one way I can give back to other members to help them with their own projects. I'll probably do other instructional sites as well with better visuals in terms of explaining the comping process. (I plan to go back into the Puerto Rico site and edit the copy and include more illustrations to make it easier to understand, but for now this is what I could offer.)

In terms of pricing – it is highly dependent on what needs done – individual cards can add a good deal – as well as subject matter (some things I'm not comfortable in terms of illustration)

Not a blank window. A full window (saying contents are not found). I have a cable modem, so 9.7 mb isn't a vast download for me.

However today the contents are there.
