Distributors in Germany and USA - Board games.

Hi there,

I have a new board game out in the UK this christmas - I have been lucky with the distributor so far as they have supplied the product to the largest retailers in the UK.

Reviews of the product have been great so at least I know that when people buy it they like it.

My question is can anybody put me in touch with good distributors in the USA and Germany please?

The game is simple to learn and well presented and the price point is £19.99 which makes it the most reasonable game of its type on the shelf.

This is my first game (my day job is in finance) so I am still learning a great deal. I have hopes that the product will establish itself but who can tell?

Any distributor suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Cassini.

Congratulations, sounds like you've done quite well for yourself with your first game. Can you tell us a little more about it and about your company (sounds like you're self publishing). What's the name/theme of your game? Is it something that other BGDF members in the UK would have heard of?

That's fantastic! 5,000 copies is teriffic volume -- have you sold this just in the UK?

The biggest distributors in the US are Alliance (by far the biggest) and ACD. For an extensive list of US and international game distributors, with phone numbers, go here:

Another possibility is to work with a consolidator who can get you access to all the major distributors. I'm currently working with Impressions -- you can find their website at www.impressionsadv.net

If you've sold 5,000 copies already you've already had a big success by normal game standards. You may have a blowout success on your hands if you can replicate this in the larger US and German markets!

Chad

Not a bore at all! You've already accomplished quite a lot by having your game self-published and already picked up by some major stores, major congratulations to you!

I look forward to hearing more about your game and your story of getting it made and distributed. You must have quite a lot of the specific knowledge that people on this site are searching for. I'm sure your input would be very welcome in the various threads!

I wish I had more information to help you, but I haven't made it very far with my games yet (I'm the reluctant designer who labors slowly on multiple projects at a time over many years). I can tell you that you've come to the right place with your questions. There are many on this site who have the answers you're looking for and are more than willing to help.

Welcome to the forum!

Blag...

Sounds like "balderdash for pictures". Pretty smart, and I'm sure as long as the pictures are many, than people in the US will enjoy this as a party game. (I could see getting it)

BTW, does the word "blag" mean something specific? Or just a catchy word?

Good luck, I hope to see it on my local retailer's shelf.

Hi JJacy1,

Thanks for your questions and comments.

I suppose it may seem like Balderdash for pictures bearing in mind that Balderdash is basically Call My Bluff (a british TV game show) which is itself a version of a british radio show called 'My Word' which, not surprisingly, is based upon a single round of a 1950's US radio show called 'Says you!'

I have taken an established format, bluffing(blagging), and brought it up to date by using genuine photographs. The handy part of this idea is that photographs are universal and have no set language base. Balderdash, Call My Bluff, My Word and Says You! all depend upon unusual english words - which make terrific gameplay but isn't much good for somebody who speaks arabic, russian, hindi, yiddish or cantonese.

The game contains 248 pictures, which doesn't sound that much but believe me they provide about 40 hours of play or more - which for 19.99 is I hope good value. Booster boxes will be available and I will really try to keep the price down on these if possible. The quality and size of the pictures is good so it would be difficult to cram many more into the box. There is the CD-Rom option but I have never been convinced by this as a truly social method of play.

Blag is a word in common use in the UK and it means to con, exaggerate, lie or bluff. It derives from the french word 'blague' which means to lie or swindle. Originally the word Blag meant to steal in the UK but this has now given way to the current meaning. Interestingly the word bluff originates from the dutch word 'bluffen'.

I hope the game will catch on in the US - I would feel very proud if it did and you would have a new word to boot!

Keep well,

Cassini (aka Richard Shepherd - Futurus Games)

PS I have no website but will get around to it asap.
