How much to say?
I am fairly new to game design, having just recently caught the bug (and it is a powerful bug). I am also new to using this forum (as you can likely tell by my post count.

So my biggest question is how much should a person divulge on the Board Game Design forum, and in other forums like BGG?

Obviously games design is a hobby that absolutely depends on the input of others, and forums like these could certainly be an excellent resource for it. But has anyone ever run into IP theft, or any other worries when it comes to posting game design information?

I don't want to sound paranoid, and I certainly don't believe that my ideas are necessarily worthy of plundering, but I just want to know if people believe it is a good idea to post things like working rules, board concepts etc. for others to judge & comment on, or if it is better to be cautious and only give out information that is absolutely necessary to resolve your issue?

Cheers,

I look forward to conversing with you all in the future regarding this new hobby that I have discovered!

Never to much

I have read 2 books and been "playing" in this forum on and off for a while. What i have noticed and read is that if you don't post your ideas no one can help refine those ideas. next if you want to play test your game you are going to have to share as much detail about the game for then play testers to play. finally if you feel uncomfortable posting something or super worried then don't. I have been having alot of fun playing around with game design and have been viewing it a fun look at problem solving and a creative outlet. I hope that you enjoy the forum.

Cheers!

This . . .

. . . question comes up . . . probably monthly. You can search the forums for plenty of reassurances that have come before.

You'll certainly find more threads asking for--and receiving-- help than those saying someone stole their idea!

Concept

I don't think you can really steal a mechanic or a theme (it's pretty much all been done). Really it's the combination of mechanics and/or themes that make up game.

If you're worried, just leave out a piece of the jigsaw puzzle.
